I'm not much of a fan of systems that keep animals intensively indoors but I guess it was only a matter of time:
Think these are human residences under construction? Think again – these are pig houses! Colleague Kees van Dooren, reporter at Boerderij, a sister title to Pig Progress, recently visited this building site of pig production company Yangxiang, near Guigang in southern China.
This Chinese company is expanding rapidly – and mid-2018, 2 true pig skyscrapers will be taken into use. Each has 9 floors, both buildings having a capacity of 9,000 sows. Two other buildings of 7 floors have been taken into use already.
Animal health is the main reason to choose for multi-level pig production. These buildings have completely been shielded off from the outside world and all incoming air is being filtrated. Staff will always stay on the same level and so do the pigs. Piglets will leave the buildings after weaning.
More to come soon at www.pigprogress.net. Stay tuned …
