How good is this? How far would it go? Unobstructed line of sight required? I need remote pc access and would like a few cameras in the cow house.
I have aprox 800m between my dads bungalow and the cow house that I need internet in soon. It has line of sight but not clear and unobstructed. Dad has no pc just a tablet and smartphone connected to bt internet.
I maybe could get clear Los but it wouldn't be near a power socket and would be about 50m from where I need WiFi.
Can anyone help shed a bit of light on this or will in need to bite the bullet and contact bt about a line? What about mobile broadband? I have very little 3g or 4g inside my cowhouse but have good 3g/4g up above the roof or on top of the silo. Would this be an option?
Any help appreciated.

I have WiFi around the yard and a second yard 300m away. All goes back to the modem in the main house.

Line of sight is perfect but it still punches through a couple of trees in places.

I have one WiFi access pint on the gable of the top shed, that throws the signal over 1/2 a mile so I can get WiFi that dude of the farm if I have line of sight.

Whole system is from AgriCamera, 4 cameras, 6 WiFi access points with remote monitoring of cameras.

Very pleased with it and great to have WiFi over a chunck if the farm one side of the sheds.

Schools around here used it for years.
Link up and go back to LEA .
Line of sight.
Goes miles.
Works well and lot faster as needed by Schools IT etc.etc

My own bungalow is about 1km away but no line of sight. Can the signal be bounced from another point?

Yes that can be done. Needs a power supply at each point
That’s exactly how rural Wi-Fi networks (wireless ISPs) work. It’s a “mesh” of nodes or repeaters basically. At certain points in the mesh the routers are connected to the outside world via leased lines etc for internet connectivity.

There’s no reason with a bit of thought and patience why the same can’t be done on a farm. The mesh access point are available for about £90 a pop from a decent manufacturer like Uniquiti.

Longer distance between nodes, means you need to go higher Above the ground and have better, more “focussed” antennas and maybe radios with a bit more grunt.

Still all very doable, for very reasonable money these days.

As already mentioned UniFi is the kit you want to be looking at.

The mesh access points are good for building up decent coverage around the yard but for longer distances they do a lot of point to point kit.

This guy has lots of interesting videos on different unifi deployments but this is a good intro

Thanks to all who have contributed to this. I have a system coming from a local guy who will be fit to provide back up if required. We have looked at it and have two big ash trees to fell and I will have unobstructed line of sight.
