Pointing mix for slates

Hoping someone can tell me the mix to use for pointing up the edges of the slates on the gable end of the house. Also do I need to use frost-proofer as it is hovering around freezing most nights and I am working on the north side of the roof. Thanks.

4 sand 1 cement, bit of plasticiser and away you go
