Pollard pillar drill

Can anybody help please. What oil is supposed to go in the gearbox of a Pollard Corona 130F pillar drill?
Cannot find specific info on line and there is suggestions from iso 22 to 90 grade gear oil.

I changed the 3 phase motor to a single phase and decided to change oil at the same time. Machine is now noisier than before. The only other thing I can think that may make it noisier is if the toothed gear that sits on the motor shaft is now sitting slight further into its connecting gear and may take a bit of time to bed in nicely.
TIA

it's only a drill gearbox, not a tractor axle, nice straight 30 or 40 surely be plenty heavy enough, get to places the ep90 would stick up when cold?
Did you have the wiring for the old 3ph motor? may have been 6 pole running at half speed? my Herbert has electrical two speed, just wondering if you have gained speed

I was running it on a 240v to 415V inverter but that packed up and I felt disinclined to risk a chunk of money on a new inverter so bought a single phase motor. That has gone on ok but the machine is noisier than before. I am fairly sure the noise is coming from the spindle because if I grasp the rotating spindle and apply some resistance the noise stops.

Some say that the phosphor bronze gear shifters need a particular kind of oil. The oil that came out looked like 90 grade oil but that's a guess. Maybe the correct oil will get to the places that are noisy.
Anyway I have ordered my birthday present; a complete manual for it so I should find answers soon.
These drills seem to sell around the £1000 mark so it's worth looking after.

@Ruston3w All the old 3 phase wiring is still in place and I will keep the motor in case I ever sell it.
You have me wondering about the speed now. I think it is the same but on the side of the drill is a 4 position on/off switch so maybe it was 2 speed and I never realised. It has a range of speeds from 227 to 2920 I think but some of the same model drills are shown as 113 to 1450. I have wired it through a stop/start switch because the original is all in the 3 phase wiring.
Thanks for the help guys.

A 1ph motor will never run as smooth as a 3ph, so the noise could be backlash in the gears aggravated by the vibration from the motor. This would also explain why it goes away when placed under load.

Think of the difference between a 4cyl and 6 cyl engine.

Good thinking. I really wanted to think of all possibilities before ripping it to bits and you've added a very plausible suggestion. Trouble is it might mean I would have been better off going for another inverter. It would occasionally make a little bit of this noise on the inverter so maybe there is wear in the gears although everything feels really solid.

Some gearbox oil additives are not compatible with bronze components such as the selector forks. 10 minutes on Google should tell you what you need to know.

Thanks for looking @Blackleg , I have now bought the manual from the same people; gear box oil should be Shell Vitrea 37 or Mobil Vactra oil heavy so I have ordered some of the modern equivalent and hope it helps. If not it will probably just have to run noisy as I think spending more on it is silly.
