Just out of interest I’ve had a colony of bees in my bedroom chimney for a good 10 months now. Is there any way of coaxing them out and getting them into a hive? I’ve had to tape a board across the fireplace. They use the chimney pot to get in and out but it’s at a fair height. A beekeeper took the last colony that swarmed on the side of the house but these are within the chimney stack.

Hi Dr Wazzock,

In short, No. Unfortunately even if they swarm they will leave behind queen cells. On the rare occasion they will all leave. Your best bet is to call your local pest control who will beevack (Hoover them out) them out - that does't damaged the bees by the way. Some local beekeepers may be able to help - Its worth a phone call.

I had this problem in my previous house. A local beekeeper, who put hives by my rape each year, put a couple of sections of a hive on the roof and tied it to the chimney. The bees took to it and robbed the honey out of the chimney.
