Ha!

About five or six years ago, I grew some spuds, the ones that look at my photos on here will understand how many. I was after some spud boxes, not knowing really where to start, they are fairly rare around these parts.

I found myself at the Cereals Event, where walking around the various isles I wandered on to a stall with brand new spud boxes on it, obviously a manufacturer of said boxes, one of their rep's came over to me, striking up a conversation.

After a while he enquired if I was looking to buy some boxes...

"I am" said I "I've started growing potatoes this year"

"Have you? Great!" Said the rep enthusiastically, reaching into his back pocket and producing a notebook "So, how many were you thinking of?"

"Well, um..." I said, genuinely thinking how big of a load of spuds that my little patch would produce "three or four perhaps, depends on the postage costs"

"Eh?"

"Well, I recon that I will need three or four, depending on what you charge for delivery. Can I buy them individually?" I enquired, thinking that this was a perfectly valid question

"Three or four?" the rep looked at me, partly with surprise, partly with pity, "Three or four hundred?"

"No, three or four" I replied, but "it depends what type of crop I get, I've not grown my own spuds before"

"Enjoy your day at the show, sir" said the rep, slamming his notebook shut before turning and striding away back toward his caravan.

If you'r reading this Mr Spud Box, just so you know, three was ample, and I did manage to find some! :)

Ha ha! Well yeah, I'm at the same end of the game as you. I was just hoping a farmer who had stopped growing spuds, or wanted shot of some old boxes, or suchlike, might have a few I could buy down this way. I was up in Cambridgeshire a few months back and there's piles of them in every yard, it probably wouldn't be hard to buy a few up that way but I don't fancy carting them all the way back from that far north*

*It's north to me - I'm nearer France than London.
