Was there much to learn from the trip? (Be worried about) 🤔
It was good to see where all my seed potatoes go. Huge difference in scale from the large growers of well over 1000ac of potatoes each to the small family farms that are still using buffalo and donkeys on their 3ac farm ( growing 1ac of spuds)
All wanting Scottish seed.
The packers are busy exporting to Spain, Italy and Greece and getting good prices, they’re not interested in exporting to UK just now as too much hassle and plenty of demand in Southern Europe.

Let’s be honest, with chipping prices around £500 ex farm, £16+ delivered into chip shops, portion sizes and consumption will drop, probably permanently.
Prices have been pretty stagnant, although high, for the last month or so.
There‘s probably adequate in store for the rest of the season without prices rising much higher, but if the supply gets tighter prices will rise further to curtail demand further, until balance is achieved.
The weather for getting 2024 crop planted may be the fly in the ointment.

That's what happened a few years back, maybe 2012 or 2013, demand never fully recovered

Demand does drop a bit, utilisation rates increase.

Also, growers feel price will go sky high and hold off selling. This creates the shortage short term so prices keep rising, round and round it goes until growers are happy with price/need cash flow/want them away before spring work starts, and start selling.

Price will remain level for a while, then as season progresses, imports arrive. More than normal potatoes still in store as people holding off for big price. Price drops significantly. 🤷

As long as growers are sensible and don't increase area this year, should be ok.
