whats driving change within the sector and how will it affect poultry production in the future?
Hi I was wondering are you in the free range egg business at the minute. We are at the early stages of looking into it but with such bad feedback on the threads it's hard to know what to do....its a big investment surely there has to be money in it or nobody what be starting.

Why people are starting at the moment is one of the great mysteries. I can only assume they are being fed false financial information, or are unable to work a calculator.

Reminds me of the apple job, 5-8 yrs ago quality arable fields were being planted with them because it was the 'future' according to the experts, now the jobs on the floor and more orchards than i can remember are being grubbed out and contracts torn up

Farm near me had invested a fair chunk to get their free range unit to the point of getting planning permission approved, they had even grassed down arable fields for the run area. From the time of the first planning application to the final approval the numbers going into the calculator changed significantly... Initially frustrated by the slow planning approval they are now glad of it! The numbers don't make sense any more, rather than plough on as many others would once so far committed, they have taken the wise move to put the whole project on ice.

We have a small holding at the minute .....absolutely hate my job and want to farm....i always wanted my own egg business....but I'm so disheartened from what I've read....is there any investment worthwhile at the minute.....

Is there any predictions that things will change.....with the phrasing out of caged eggs will there be a demand for free range.....as planning process takes so long .....would it be a bet to be ready to go to meet the demand when all battery eggs are gone

It would be a bet, like any business decision. I read some of our supermarkets are planning to phase out caged egg (mostly from Eastern Europe) sales by 2025. Maybe that will increase the demand for UK produced free range eggs or maybe Eastern Europe will switch some of their cage production to barn eggs and still be able to produce at much lower costs than a British Free range egg. Much can change in 5 days, correctly predicting the situation 5 years ahead is 90% luck, 10% skill. With any financial decision it is wise not to gamble more than you are willing to loose.

At the BFREPA conference last year, they said there were already enough free range eggs being produced to supply the shortfall from removing cage eggs.

As I understand it, free range production has been ramped up expecting cage eggs to be phased out, but the cage sheds are still producing eggs and its resulting in oversupply.
