Be CIPC Compliant - Ensure stewardship recommendations are followed in low temperature stores as part of an integrated sprout control strategy

The new Stewardship recommendations on Chlorpropham (CIPC) this storage season (2013-14) have limited its use in low temperature stores to only one application, before pull down to holding temperature. Crops in stores that have been configured correctly, and treated soon after loading is completed, have been holding well, even at dose rates below the maximum permitted on the label. However, in some other stores it is acknowledged that sprout regrowth is occurring and where this has happened, ethylene has been used. Some other stores have had an application of spearmint oil.

NAAC applicators group chairman, Nick Green says, “All of the CIPC applicator members are sticking robustly with the Stewardship group recommendations to treat low temperature stores only once with CIPC and they are actively helping store managers with alternative sprout control strategies.” He stresses that sprout control is most successful in stores where positive ventilation systems are used to achieve a uniform distribution of the CIPC fog.

David Walker, Chairman of the Fresh Potato Suppliers Association (FPSA) comments that it is crucial that the industry stick to the Stewardship Guidelines on CIPC use as the industry cannot afford to have any further MRL exceedances.

There are pressures on stores and managing crop supply onto the market is going to be challenging. This season is demonstrating that ensuring that stores are fit for purpose and having a clear sprout control strategy is vital. The further in advance that you can plan unloading, may well determine how successful the season is.

The Potato Industry CIPC Stewardship Group (PICSG) is a collaboration between key industry organisations that have come together to promote the stewardship of the sprout suppressant CIPC. The Group comprises all the companies that hold the approvals for the CIPC formulations (Aceto Agrochemical Corporation, Certis, Dormfresh and United Phosphorus Limited), the Potato Processors Association, the Fresh Potato Suppliers Association, the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC), the National Farmers Union (NFU), Red Tractor Farm Assurance, and the research institutes Sutton Bridge CSR and Cranfield University.

The 'Be CIPC Compliant’ initiative was formed by the Group in 2013 to develop the campaign activity of the previous five years, and to provide an industry identity. Delivering a call to action to all within the potato supply chain, to 'Be CIPC Compliant' means to proactively respond to the serious issues surrounding the use of the potato sprout suppressant CIPC, and to follow best practice guidance.
