Hello everyone...

Id like to repaint the tinwork one one of my tractors, bonnet, wings and cab roof, they need a bit of attention first, no big dents but rust, a bit of pretty scabby rust, and a tiny amount of rot...

How should i get on with the preparation...? Im thinking of sandblasting...

:)

Soda doesnt remove rust, it's great for alloy casings etc and it will eventually take paint off it's a slow old job. Crushed glass is what I use, it's not too abrasive but enough to whip paint off and get the rust pits all cleaned out efficiently.
I then whack the filler in, sand then 2k prime, I used to use etch primer then 2k primer but the surface after sand blasting is so good for adhesion I dont bother now, not had any issues. But you will need to crack on as the metal surface starts to rust pretty quickly after sandblasting. I then use 2k paint.

All of that but if it’s very rusty we sometimes leave it to bleed out any rust then flash it up again before paint works very well and worth doing if it starts to rust immediately after blasting as that’s the moisture coming out of the pores

Anything that can be unbolted send it to powder coat
Powder coat is ok when new, you only have to chip it and it'll start rusting underneath and spread, in bad cases you can end up with it pulling off in sheets, it's also bl**dy hard work shotblasting it again if you wish to pain or get it re-coated. I'd much rather paint it, much easier to keep on top of but that's just me!!

Prep it properly, make sure you have a zinc based primer system not just colour and you have a very very good system. Like painting it’s all about doing the whole job properly not just boshing a colour on it.
