Dear TFF'ers

Interested to gauge your views as when I was selling machinery I heard various opinions.

Do you like to see a machine, fully prepared? Tyre Shine, Front weights painted, Wheels Painted, Hitches and Hooks free of rust. Properly valeted etc

Or

Do you prefer to see it in an "Straight off Farm" state? nothing done, maybe just cab swept out washed down.

I've said this many times before, I can't see through muck, grime and dirt. If it's for sale and i'm coming to view it clean the thing.

As for paintwork well my view is that is something that can be discussed with the seller and either get them to sort it or diy with the price adjusted accordingly.

Edit- the last machine i bought was filthy. If it had been cleaned i would have paid a fair bit more for it.

As long as any machine is washed and clean no problem. But fresh paint can be done after it's sold and before delivery if needed in deal. I would not touch a used machine all painted up before it's seen. To much can be hidden with paint.

I think 1st impressions is everything, you can tell straight away if a machine has been cared for, I knew a guy that worked for a big farm, after an oil & fuel filter change, he would touch up the nuts and bolts with paint, he was only the driver but that was his tractor and no one else was allowed to drive it,(even the boss) he even went in on Sunday mornings to clean it, on the farms time as well, but when the tractor was traded in, there were people queuing up to buy it and it always fetched top money.
If a tractor or machinery has been dogged, no amount of paint can cover it up, passed a fusion the other day that belongs to a big contractor, i should think every panel had a dent in it.

The car trades have mastered the art of cleaning vehicles for sale, they know how important it is and it's amazing what can be done. There is a lot more dirt and crevices to deal with on farm machinery so not that easy a task. Like for like, tidy kit is far easier to sell than scruffy kit, It shows that someone cared.

What exactly can you ' hide ' with paint ?
If someone has painted over rust with paint it's obvious.
If they've done it right, and sorted the rust problem first, painted it, then problem solved ?

Can't hide worn brakes with paint.
Can't hide head gasket problems with paint.
Can't hide iffy clutch and gearbox with paint.
Lack of grease won't be hidden with paint......etc,etc.
