how do you prevent gravel getting into a tile drain but allow surface water in?surface water comes from field of outwintered cattle so is muddy , tile is 6 in . bore, runs for about 400 yards down steep hill but can get blocked 300 yards down where it starts ti to level out.

Is the uphill end of the tile drain exposed? If so, dig a pond as a sump to slow flow rates and allow sediment to settle out.

Better still, find a better way of outwintering cattle that does not lead to run off and a breach of cross compliance as well as the loss of decent topsoil!
