Pricing man and tractor...?

Been speaking to a few lads recently that do a bit of man and tractoring and I was quite surprised how they were costing for both themselves and the tractor. For example when one was explaining how he costed for it he hadn't even costed for tyres, this left me thinking just how they carry on to make a living and do they just run close to the wind and pray they don't break down? So my question to everyone is just how do you cost for man and tractor and is there actually any money in it [emoji57]

Plant hire is just the same, everyone undercutting each other as borrowing is still relativly cheap.

Hired a fresh 6t swivel skip dumper a few weeks ago for about a month, £120 a week. How anyone can make that pay is beyoned me.

Once borrowing money becomes more expensive again, hire rates will start to increase.

If you're running a tractor purely for contracting and have no farm of your own, then you may well decide to subsidise the running of your tractor with your own wages. That is, you may well be able to earn more money working at McDonalds, but you get enjoyment driving tractors, specifically your own tractor, which means you'll happily pay yourself what works out at £3 an hour or less just for the thrill. Obviously it's unsustainable long term but I don't blame farmers for taking on such people.

If you have a farm of your own that you need the tractor for already, then it's only the variable costs that really come in to it plus your own inability to do work on your own farm as and when you want. My general impression, in many cases, is that young farmers would be better off at home driving their own business forward rather than galavanting around the local area earning pennies and wearing tractors out.

There is a lot of poor business decisions made in farming, partly due to the enjoyment of the job and partly due to a lack of ability in some areas. But farming is being driven, through reductions in subs and generational changes, in to becoming more professional.

By the time you can charge a reasonable rate for man & tractor, everyone will be using robots and driverless vehicles anyway. Contractors of the future will be nothing more than fleet managers.

I pay the customer just so i can tear about with the flashing tit going looking important....

Does that make me the winning bidder for the jobs:scratchhead:

Edit- Back in the real world, anything less than £30/hour has me reaching for the telly remote:rolleyes:
