It appears that the Haflinger had a lot of Tatra influence in its design. As far as I can tell, Tatra didn't invent the backbone chassis concept, but they did develop it a lot. Hans Ledwinka was Tatra's chief engineer, inventing the backbone chassis with swinging independent axles. His son Erich worked for Tatra and then Steyr when they were creating the Haflinger and Pinzgaur.

I was at a jobsite last week and got talking with a truckdriver. I asked why no tatra as he had a new ridgid chassis tipper. He said tatra didn't like axle loads above 10 tonnes while we can do 11.5 on driven axles. So an 8x8 can legally weigh 46 tonnes while a 5 axle tatra is only rated to 50.
The tatras here are semi agricultural vehicles.
