Propino brackling

I'm having a disaster with some Propino Spring barley. I thought brackling was when the ear necked over so much it snapped but my Propino is just kinked so badly i can't help cutting the heads off while combining.
Before I bother home saving some is it a problem with Propino or are a lot of varieties like this this year? Sad thing is it got knocked about well before it was fit so I couldn't have cut it before now.

Put a double set of lifters on, should help lift the ears on to the table. You might need to fiddle with stubble height to get the best result - once they're on shaving the stubble might not actually be best to get all of the ears!

When the ear bends over so much and breaks off is Necking, sometimes caused by a copper deficiency and varietal as well. Brackling is when the straw bends/kinks below the ear, this is scored on the RL, Propino is an 8 (as are quite a few others), KWS Irina is the only other brewing variety with a better score!

I reckon my straw is bent over about half way up, so I suppose my stems just weren't strong enough for the wind/rain.

Tipple drilled same day as my Propino is fine with minimal brackling, Propino on the other hand is very bad, it wasn't terribly leggy either. It's a shame as it looked very nice from day 1, maybe just a "type of year" thing?? Yield between the two is about the same (on brash mind!)

I have this every year, despite a foliar application of copper and manganese. Half a litre of Terpal doesn't stop it either. What I don't have is tissue test results to see what the plant really lacks. I always wondered about potassium but brackling happens in high K soil index zones in the field too (SOYL smart sampling according to soil type).

Low in potash? Weak straw?

I wondered that. Just because the soil K index is high doesn't mean the plant can get enough.

Sorry - couldn't find a graph for barley.

Put it down to the season, last year which was similar weatherwise, our Propino stood nicely, similar drilling date this year on similar fields treated the same as last year it is brackling, cut on the 18th August last year.No PGRs either year(will get some next year)

make sure calcium is available...and im guessing if growth is robust it may not be able to scavange enough through the roots...might need snake trial...hard when every year is so different. I think foliar feed may be necessary when growth is rapid.

Ours I s the same. It was are best looking crop before some big storms and wind. Just spent a day cutting 20ha when we would normally do 40ha. It's yielded well but left quite a fe heads one the floor. Makes you think about output v yield
