Public Goods

Is it possible to come up with a list of "Public Goods" that agriculture can provide in return for direct financial support?

Some will be obvious, others less so.

Btw, "providing cheap food" won't count in itself, because other countries can do that without subs from the UK taxpayer.

Or maybe stand on your own two feet post brexit? After all Mr Gove wants us to open up the countryside for a few shillings (subsidues) but WTO rules dictate otherwise...

Taking back control? My arse

It will be interesting if people shun the Gove shillings and try to farm as cheaply as possible to compete on WTO terms.

Any sort of cross compliance is not going to be popular, but there are various opportunities for the public goods in return for direct payments.

I was thinking along the lines of verge & hedge cutting, IDB work, snow clearing, road salting etc etc

(As well as the dreaded public access)

Are you guys not interested in being farmers anymore! Get out and fight for you business, Fox and Gove are banking on you just rolling over becoming council workers and the like, so they can easily implement their environment and cheap food policy.
