Putting up a dutch barn roof

We're looking at a second hand 'dutch barn' roof structure, no legs.

Thinking of sinking some telegraph poles in and bolting on.

How deep and wide should i go for concrete footings for each pole?

It's to cover our butchery unit, freezer and a loading bay for the chiller van, so we're only going about 9' above ground.
2 bays, 15' wide, 30' deep
Clay ground, some has been previously disturb and some virgin ground and firm

I think you would be better off with rsj instead of poles easier to work with and would look neater .

Could even work out cheaper I should think, there’s not a massive amount of good poles about although they have been replacing some in our area of late if you can get them. I’ve tried pushing some notes the drivers way but no poles have turned up yet :shifty:

Poles are readily available if you know where. I buy them all the time and cut them down to sell for gate posts etc. Biggest issue is their length uncut so normally cut to 18ft for fit our trailer.

Drill 3ft holes and back fill. Concrete if you’re in a rush but as said, Best to backfill. All my barns are pole barns. Economical way to do it.

they dropped 4 new ones at the bottom of the lane recently, kept my eyes peeled for the crew but they must have come and dropped them in whilst i was out.

The guy with the roof structure has poles he'll cut down to size for us, no roof sheets though, so we're looking at plastic sheet
