Quad not starting properly

Hi,

Any advice on what this might be with my quad?

When pressing the starter button it tries to start but won't. I can start it fine with the pull cord. After its been running for a bit, if I stop it then try the starter button again it seems to work. But then next day it doesn't. I thought it sounded like the battery, but I've tested it and it showing its throwing 12v.

Sounds like the battery isn't giving 12volts (measure when cranking cold) when you hit the starter, after lying up?
Charge or jump of another to test. If still no joy use a jump lead from negative on the battery to the engine frame (a new earth).

Report back ..............

Edit:
Have you got a de-compressor lever on the very top of the engine, right hand side?

Yes possibly battery not holding a charge, check for 12Voolts when cranking the engine over?
It can go as low as 10Volts and still be able to crank the engine over, any lower and probably battery issues.
But, jump first from another (when it doesn't start, to double check its the battery) as those little batteries aren't cheap.

All battery terminals spotless especially where you cant see the joint?

De-Compressor:
Some of the later models (we have a green 220KLF with a manual level on top of the engine) have built in automatic de-compressor to ease starting that give trouble. But we wont even consider that yet, as its internal ........... :(

I would be inclined to suggest it’s the starter motor magnets come loose from the shell and binding the rotor. Why the relay clicks with this issue I don’t know, too much power trying to drive the binding starter I guess.

Had this on a yam only a month ago after several months of slow starter syndrome. Check your connections sure but be prepared for a new starter to solve the issue.
