Question about OSR/WW/OSR

Having a bit of a humdinger with the old man about growing rape twice in three years. This land had never grown any OSR until two years ago and some fields now in WW grew a poor spring rape last year.

I want to get into a better rotation involving OSR every four years but want to go back to a WOSR for next year to get back into it. He insists that clubroot will knacker the job straight away (we have grown turnips about the place too). I know plenty do WW/WOSR alternately but this is not heavy land and it can be prone to clubroot in the past.

That said surely as a one off after a spring rape that was only in the ground 4 months its ok to put WOSR in 12 months later as a one off?

For some reason me growing rape in alternate years is the devils work but when he grew spuds in the same field for 3 years and PCN going up and up this was ok!

Will, did ww/osr/ww/osr etc for 12 years here and only stopped this year. Thats on a mix of heavy clay and loamy soils. Very little bit of club root in the last year which is why I am having a couple of years off the stuff. You will be fine.

Clubroot is getting quite a problem up here, perhaps wetter colder climate has a part to play, if this past backend/winter/spring's weather is going to be more of the norm for you guys further South i wouldnt be surprised if you see more Clubroot.
Cheers.

Will, as a one off you should be fine. Long term, no.

Club root risk is lower in high pH soils so don't skimp on the lime. Lincs veg farmers grow continuous brassica vegetables by raising the pH to above 8, even though it risks locking up other nutrients.

Will, just forget about OSR full stop. Not sustainable and far to much time spent thinking about all aspects of the crop. Live life and find an alternative !

Will seriously try this link and these two hybrids. As an alternative no club root issues and last year higher in one case GM THAN RAPE or sunflower.http://business.highbeam.com/411400/article-1G1-87154190/saaten

Just keep a good rotation if you can(farmers paying stupid rents haven't got a choice)wheat rape most prophitable crops. Well they are on my heavy land farm. Point to note aswel im no wiss but tight rotations of w.rape incorages slug population (rape breeds slugs)?

Sitting here today watching the snow fall seeing that this sunday might be +10 and next Saturday more snow. Got me thinking back when was a lad on the farm at home Rape did not exist nor did winter wheat. Just throw it in to rotation debate.
