Quotations

The building trade must be doing really well, so well infact that no one want's my business. Have asked a few companies for quotations and have had some initial contact but then that's it. Makes you wonder what they're like to deal with if they aren't arsed when it comes to getting a quote across for the work. Can anyone recommend good companies to contact, am looking to stick up a barn and some stables.
Equestrian arena surface companies are just as bad

The older builders have tried to get out of the game as 'cheap foreign labour' knocked their living all to sh1t and beyond! I know the feeling but only did site work when I was younger some 25 years ago, when your were well rewarded for hard work. Tradesmen are now hard to find as there has been no incentive to go and work on a non English speaking sites for several years.......
Another thing and please don't take this the wrong way but I look on here at the 'how much' for; X, Y, Z? and some quote prices that are below that which you'd pay a slave........Or spend £1 to make £0.99p! Pointless and bonkers:LOL:
I bet that if you are serious and look hard at those who have been 'doing it' for more than a decade (and they are still out there) you will find three companies who; 1, will quote you a realistic price using quality materials. 2, Will be willing to travel to your site and may live in a caravan whilst doing the work and 3, do a good job. and actually finish it;)
Just don't expect a good job with the monkey and peanut situation.

I'd start with a set of proper drawings, to scale with all levels marked (preferably by a proper surveyor) and a materials list specifying the materials required and in the volumes needed. A good plan won't come cheap and if you do it properly yourself you will discover just how much time and effort will be needed to make even a reasonable job.....for top quality you just have to put in that 'little bit more':D Oh, and make sure ALL the required permissions are in place BEFORE work starts.

Appreciate what you're saying @suffolksmallholder these companies have been sent to scale drawings and discussions have taken place with a few of them regarding materials but then the communication has stopped. I have tried local builders and people from further away.

It's all picked up again on the buildings well in this area anyway I've had quite a few offers to pick my trowel up again in the last few months! So people aren't desperate like they were a few years ago! I'm surprised your just getting ignored though generally if you don't want a job you stick a silly high quote in and if you do get it your quids in! A barn and stables sounds like a nice little job though! Good luck with it could you not tackle it yourself?

@Loftyrules Perhaps you could break it into smaller bite-sized pieces? Ground-work/drainage, finishing there at the top of the over site concrete/DPC. This is the time and opportunity to tidy the site too with hard standing etc. Then acquire the construction materials which can be part loaded onto this area (blocks & bricks). If you have secure storage things like the door frames and the stable doors can also be ready and to hand. I wouldn't recommend these be stored out in the sun else they would warp and discolour. Speak to a truss maker and again have these to hand if you like. My trusses have just gone up onto their final positions and with the hot weather we're having right now I'm glad they were stored drying in my barn for the 18 months since they were made.
Ground-workers will do your job to DPC as I said above. A team of three and two (3 brickies and 2 labourers) to do the construction work to wall plate @Lofty1984 . Chippies for the roof and get the brickies back to do the gables. You'll have to get a good keen scaffolding crew to work in between the construction trades as they go up. A lift each 19 course of bricks....
Roofing will have to be discussed as you will have to decide on the pitch when the trusses are drawn and decide on the covering materials, i.e. wriggly tin/tiles/felt(ugh!)
Keep a clean site and the sand on good well drained ground with good access all round and you will have it reflected in the resulting work quality.;)
Things like a cement mixer can be bought cheaply new and sold on at the end...Perhaps a 10' secure storage container too so cement can be stored along with wall ties/profiles/DPC/plastisizer and all those other things that live in sheds:rolleyes:

I would imagine you will be well into the CDM Rules http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/cdm/summary.htm so look up and retain your adviser re this. My one was/is a Man U fan and often travelled to your area for home games so I may be able to provide a name of a handy fellow......

Hi Loftyrules

We are based in Herefordshire (covering the whole of the UK and beyond) and have been established over 30 years. We offer a complete steel framed building service from inception to completion (and anywhere in between from planning to installation, or simply supply and delivery only to suit your requirements). We specialise in Agricultural and Equestrian buildings and would welcome the opportunity to quote for your project.

Should you wish us to provide you with a quotation, please email me the plans to [email protected], along with a contact number for you and I will take a look.

All the best with your build.

I think it might just be a Manchester thing. I am having similar problems trying to get quotes for a pretty standard 25 mtr by 15 mtr Agri building which I already have planning permission for just outside Bolton. Thought I had it sorted until I was told the building manufacturer only delivers on artics when they know the largest vehicle we can handle is 6 wheelers.

Renewablejohn have you tried Bradley contracts? I think they're quite busy as well but they manufacture themselves in appley bridge so could bring it to you with their tractor and trailer. I do know another local lad you can try if your struggling.

Took your advice and tried Bradley contracts. Recieved email auto response then nothing. Is there no one willing to fabricate a 15 mtr x 25 mtr agri building and then deliver it to Bolton for a reasonable price.

What will happen in July when only CE marked frames can be used? How many fabricators are up to speed on this, especially small local ones

Needed a ditch cleaned and a road resurfaced here. Same thing. Finally, my patience snapped. I hired a digger, go myself an operator. bought in the materials, did some of it with farm machinery and saved myself over £2,000 on the lowest quote on a two day job! I've learnt a valuable lesson for the future. Sod them!
