I thought one issue was the amount of land cropped was actually shrinking, not enough water in California and salt problems in Australia being 2 reasons

Just turned on radio 4 and heard a scientist saying if we all went vegan we could live on only 25% of the land in the world, I am so annoyed. So what we do when we then have no soil left?

Good point - livestock grazing permanent pasture, in a controlled and sensitive way, will not cause any significant soil erosion.

It's also a well established fact that 98.75% of the population regard Vegans as weird.

I thought the woman sounded right up herself!

A typical radio 4 "Lets have a Scientist on" program that presented someone's over-generalised, half-baked opinion rather than any true Scientific fact.

Utter nonsense that anybody with a brain will have realised was nothing but tosh!

A more typical "Oh, I've got children now. Perhaps I'd better look at doing something for the environment" woman, you are unlikely to meet!

Let's hope she goes back to her original topic of trying to find Black holes, then gets lost in one!

That would be the same Lewis "I invested in a fake meat burger chain" Hamilton.

Vested interests, much?

On the Beeb? How dare you suggest such a thing? Why next you will be saying that they knew one of their presenters was a child abuser and they covered it up for thirty years.

Typical Radio 4 pseudo intellectual crap, god it’s an awful radio station. I used to listen to it a bit whilst driving but I just go fed up with tossers like Melvin Bragg, Jim Al-Kallili and John Humphrys either patronising those they thought beneath them or brown nosing the luvies.

It's straight out of Poore and Nemecek report. She's read it and swallowed it whole. This is the report which keeps turning up like a bad penny and keeps being used to churn out these simplistic headline grabbing statistics without context (massive system boundaries from deforestation pre crop, including the cost of fertiliser and machinery manufacture and delivery to farm, through the farm stage and right up to the cost of glass manufacture to package the product and stick it on the retail shelf.) Hopefully if she is a scientist she will do further research and will ask some more questions. I have emailed Joseph Poore with the attached and I'm waiting for his reply. this is the 'food system' assessed in the Poore report. (Ok, that's come out very small, this link might work... https://www.google.com/imgres?imgur...hUKEwiX3ZLS5JPvAhUs2eAKHZmpCEcQMygEegUIARCtAQ

The 'if we all went vegan we can live of 1/4 of the land' is the 3023019 thousand ha he attributed to pasture land freed up/not required, as a result of no animal agriculture. Which is roughly 3/4 of the total farmland, 4225478 thousand ha.
The remaining arable land is going to need to be farmed very hard!
