Raft build

Right got local charity raft race coming up in a couple weeks.

We borrowed local YFCs raft last year and came 4th (but won most original raft!),
The raft was a fair unit made from 25lt drums and wood, fair heavy, the team felt we could do even better with a more sleek craft.
Last year we had 8 team members on a raft based on 36x 25lt chem drums, which is 900kg displacement.

So the requirement is to hold 6 team members incl @itsintheblood @exmoor tom and myself, so far none of the team are big units :D. Av weight let's say 90kg so I reckon 600kg team including the theme prop (that's a secret but very light weight).

I've been told to not go over board with what ever supplies the floation otherwise the raft will ride too high....... obviously not enough floation and we sink in the Bristol ditch!

I'm abit limited size wise to my flatbed trailer to get raft to beach on the big day.
So 14ft x 6ft

So my current thinking is either 2x rows of 5 x 120lt blue barrels, so ten in total, = 1200kg displacement.

Or 2x rows of 4x 120lt barrel, 8 in total, 960kg displacement but some loss of space for the team to paddle.

Or 2x rows of 7x 60lt barrel, So 14 in total, 840kg displacement.

I'm thinking all 3 designs held together with Ali scaffold tube and clamps, that way I can break down and change reasonable easily.

I reckon design 3, using 60lt drums would be best as the barrels are only 15" across so nice and sleek, but I'm concerned whether there's enough floation?

Thoughts TFF?

I favour the 60l barrels, you won't be in a position of being too high in the water to row. Make sure that you have good places to sit people so that they can pull on the oar without getting splinters in their bum as they slide backward. :)

Built one for our local raft race years ago, there was no science involved just loads of lager and plenty trial and error.
Ended up with 2 sheets of 8 by 4 ply with four rows of 5 gallon drums clamped on underneath. Drag at the front was the biggest problem so kept adding drums to the front and moving seats back till we got the front just out the water.
The best rafts were made out of that expanding foam stuff or big drums, seem to think one of the few rules was a square front so the had to be modified with a plate fixing them together.

When they used to do the 3 day River Wye raft race (Hay on Wye to Chepstow) the serious teams were based on the 25l drum and scaffold. All the drums butted up tight with no gaps between to create as sleek a profile as possible and the bow made from the front of a canoe. They still do a short version.

Cheers lads

60lt barrels have been ordered, chap on the phone thought I was mental though when I explained what I was building and that it was going in the sea!

The pros carefully weld the barrels together then strap to Ali frame.
The local race is two races, the charity one and the pro one, last year the sea was abit choppy and we watched one of the pro rafts fold in half as they tried to get it over the first breaker wave

The one I was involved with was a serious team, they didn't weld the barrels so any damaged one from low water stretches could be easily replaced.
I will accept rough sea is a very different scenario to a river so you're probably right to go with fewer, larger barrels. You just need to balance ride height (stability) with out creating too much displacement (harder to move through the water).

Biggest concern is if one of @roscoe erf butlins whales tries to latch on and drag us under!:nailbiting:

Years ago made one from half a dozen 45 gallon drums strapped together. Of course it kept flipping over (1200+kg buoyancy) so someone had the bright idea of taking a couple of plugs out to let some water in for ballast and stability.

It's surprising how much oil is left in a supposedly empty barrel. And what a slick it makes in a reservoir!

Long time ago now but when I was in Round Table we built a cracking craft for the annual race on the Severn. Got two ally drop tanks ex RAF , frame on top with two bikes driving a paddle wheel mounted between. Went well in trials on local Chasewater pool, but not so good on the river!

When we had a colege of education here, there was an annnual raft race during rag week. We made one out of lorry inner tubes, tied together like a pair of sausages before fully inflating them. Brilliant down the Derwent, over the weir no problem! The mark one was just the inner tubes tied together, and it dragged a lot of water in the circles inside the tubes, IYSWIM. Met Mrs. Moor on the first one!
