Anyone using either traditional ram pump or the papa pump to source water?
Any comments good or bad?
Our borehole is struggling to keep up and looking at alternatives.

We have a green and carter 3" ram pump. Had it new about 10 years ago. It paid for its self in the first year. Its brilliant. Lifts water about 30 metres up, and about 200metres in length. Got a steady flow through all my buildings. Has never frozen. Just plods on 24 hrs a day.

Farm next door has one, head is about 200ft.

It pumps water up about 40 foot into an under ground tank which is enough to supply water for his barley beef indoors, about 60 or so head.

It tirelessly clunks away 24/7 and hes not touched it in many years by all accounts

That is just ridiculous. You could siphon direct into the tank and then use the excess water discarded by the ram pump to drive a turbine and generate electric.

We have a Green & Carter installed in 1927 and still going strong. six foot supply head, delivers to approx. 150ft and it pumps about 800 gallons/day - enough to serve 3 houses plus watering some pasture. Occasionally it stops (usually caused by debris in the water) and you just have to give it a kick to get it going again. Other than that, maintenance consists of replacing the clack about once every thirty years.

Perhaps have a word with the guy at g&c, he'll tell you what spec you will need to do that. From memory I think the max a ram can lift to is 30x the supply head so you'll need at least a 4m head to do that. Beyond that, as someone said the more head the better as it will deliver more volume. And the size of pump will be dictated by how much water supply you have and how much volume you want delivered

We have two papa pumps with about 35ft head iirc, they pump around 15k litres a day each back to the farm up to a height of 250ft and over a distance of around 1200m through a 50mm alkathene pipe. Installed the system ourselves around 3yrs ago for £6500 and paid for itself in the first year. Need a good strong river/stream though as ours dries up in the summer for a month or two
