reared calf pneumonia

really struggling to keep one batch healthy at the moment came onto unit 4 weeks ago lost one today breathing hard ,frothy mouth,he had 6ml of Zaktran + 6ml of metacam three days ago ,yard is warm well bedded and ventilated ,calves have had rispoval on rearing unit, thinking of giving IBR vaccine, vet coming out today to have a look and offer advice, what are others using to treat pneumonia at the moment, part the problem is they are Frisian steers and I have not got any idea how much colostrum they have at birth plus they never seem as vigourous as other breeds

Weathers not good at the minute for pneumonia, could do with some frost...If you've got any bad and your vet is coming to see u ask him to bring a micotil with them. Always worth trying that imo

Having a bad couple of days with pneumonia here as well. Snow and freezing fog last weekend up to 12 degrees at night a few days later seems to have really set it off. As @Northeastfarmer says really need a change of weather.
Might be wrong but I think zactran and mycotil ( and tylan ) are a similar working ingredient.

You are supposed to follow up with another dose of rispoval I believe 3-4 weeks after they have the first dose. If they had rispoval4 that has an ibr vaccine in it I believe. Some people say only give them one dose but the manufacturers do reckoned the 2 and it's the same with the bovipast vaccine. Hope this helps.

Pretty sure for full immunity on ripsolval4 they need both injections 3-4 weeks apart

Hi, what weight was your calf?

I only ask because the drug dosages seem high. Metacam is 1 ml per 40kg. Was the other drug Zactran? if it was its 1ml per 25kg. I didn't know if an overdose would cause any ill affects. We give both under the skin. You have to catch them fairly early on otherwise they have lung damage which affects them when they get bigger and they cannot get enough oxygen in to function properly. We lost 2 out of a batch of 63 like this.

125kg vet came out today said we were doing all we can possibly improve air flow over calves but need to keep them warm unit sits on top of a hill smokebomb sugested some more ridge boards need removing and a gable opening up but more shelter down the side off shed,as said catching early most important this can only really be achieved by taking temp vet said which may be a PIA as we have 100 in every two months

Have u got an open roof ridge? Makes a huge difference, having it open draws the dirty air out like a chimney
