Can you claim back the road fund duty on Petrol bought for quads/chainsaws/stationary engines used for solely agri purposes?
I emailed HMRC and they came back to me with " yes you can claim back VAT if you are registered":banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:.
I replied that's not what I asked and explained further, they never got back to me.
Can it be done?
Has anyone done it?
If so, how?
TIA

I would say no you cannot claim back fuel duty.. there is an element of duty on red tractor diesel believe it or not.. even that’s not duty free

There is the same duty on clear diesel and petrol about 57p a litre.
The duty on red diesel is about 11p.
So I thought the 46p a litre was worth chasing, £9+ per Jerrycan.
If you do find out if it can be claimed i’d be very interested! 78litre (3 cans) doesn’t last long here most of the year and lambing it’s under 2 days worth!

I think you’re wasting your time, if it could be done there would be a ridiculous amount of fraud going on!
Are your quads not road registered as well?
Quads aren't registered or road legal as are not used on road. As for fraud there aren't going to be that many people in the grand scheme of things that would be eligible to make a case. The problem is that some of use quite a considerable amount of petrol in a year on non road going equipment. And where would we all be if none of us asked questions?[emoji1]

Buy a diesel quad , end of story!

Unlike diesel, where derv carries the full rate of fuel duty and red has a lower rate, all petrol as the same rate of duty.

There was white and red petrol during WWII, as diesel was not in common use then. Tractors ran either on petrol only, or on TVO (kerosene), with petrol for starting.

Vat on petrol can be reclaimed if you're vat registered.

Ok thought I'd covered that on my original post.
It is my understanding that part fuel duty can be claimed back for certain uses ie: marine, power generation etc.
So to clarify I am trying to find out if there is some mechanism in place so the duty can be claimed back on agricultural use petrol.

If there was a way it would be common practice already.

As i read the rules, you cannot claim it back in an engine , unless generating power.
