Receiving Money from abroad

I've something advertised on Facebook Marketplace and someone is interested in buying it, He says he's British but currently in Poland. What is the safest way for me to receive the money (£40)? I will not have anything to do with Pay Pal.

If a real Brit he will no doubt have a UK bank account, he simply has to go to his on line bank and transfer you the money. The question is do you feel confident enough to give him your name, your bank account number and sort code?

These days the name address bank account number and sort code is on every invoice I receive.. How does that create problems?

If you have a savings account it can receive money, but it can't be spent or have the money DD'd like a current A/c.
As far as I know It needs to be transferred to another of your accounts before it can be moved out of your bank.

If he's British and has a UK bank account just have them transfer to your account, wait until it's there and send whatever it is you're selling 🤷‍♂️

Processes might be different in the UK I guess.

While this person may have some controversy on this forum, Jeremy Clarkson once had that same sentiment, and put his details in his Sunday Times column (albeit in 2008).

With some payment processors using direct debit instead of cards (e.g. GoCardless) for invoicing, someone could easily set up a direct debit for any amount and use your details.

Whether or not that direct debit goes through is another matter, but most people wouldn't want to chance losing thousands and not getting it back, especially if the bank claims they didn't protect their information etc.

But yes, I agree, it seems weird. I would just wait until the person is back in the UK.

I have an account solely for buying and selling via wire transfers and e transfers. Keep no money in it and move only enough to pay for said purchases. That way if anyone gets creative I don’t wake up to an empty bank account. Very unlikely but you never know.

What is it your selling to Poland for £40 is the question 🤔, that what rings alarm bells is my thoughts, ask yourself why is he wanting to buy it ?
PayPal is quite safe, it's the email address that's the problem, ie they can or anyone else can send you an email, when you open it, it can infect your computer and harvest information off the said PC, and if you bank on it, it can get your login details,
There getting more and more advanced on this sort of thing, however a good anti virus program can pick this up, and fill your spam folder with the crap,
WhatsApp can do the same to name another often used media,

£40 ! is it worth it ? Your bank could well be the safest option, as they would look for suspicious transactions following your spending history over the time you have been with them, even then its not fully secure, as I found out to my own expenses, however since it happened I have become good friends with the guy that got all my money 😆 and had a laugh about it
