Recession proof

Hi all.
First off, sorry if I'm touching a soft nerve but its a genuine question with no malice behind it.
The recent news of cheaper beef being imported into Ireland is causing panic amongst the farming community. It got me thinking about land value and upkeep/maintenance costs of the farms affected.
My question is, do you think a farmer being hit by this would/could legally, sell off plots of land for uses such as habitation without zoning issues in order to gain income. This is essentially the first step in a pipe dream but in Ireland at least, meeting a few lads and offering them rent and fresh veg for the chance to build a glorified shed and garden is not the worst idea. My hope is it'll help me ride out the next recession as it seems silly to buy a normal house on the cusp of one.
Cheers.
