On the International the Red ones, pre Case International that were a darker red and black ones,
I am talking 4wd ones, am I right in saying all the red/white ones had side drive to front axle, and all red/black were center drive to front axle,
was there any difference in steering lock ? and was the side drive all ok or had some problems ?
also what about hydraulics, did all 885 have the pre sensordraulic 3 point linkage with separate draft and position levers,
what about early red/white 856, were they all sensordraulic ? or not,

what are the good and bad points about the 2 above tractors, both have the XL cabs, just looking what to look for before seeing them

I had a 1986 Case 885xl, black engine, last of the side drives to the front axle. 1987, centre driveline.
No problems with the side driveline, but manual engagement of it with the lever was " awkward ".

No 885s have sensodraulic afaik. Only use a 2wd IH 885so don’t know about engagement of 4wd. I would say an 856 is a much more HD tractor, I think but I don’t know that they are all sensidraulic. @Badshot has one. I’d really like a tidy IH 856 4wd.

Early 856 tractors were just 2 lever hydraulics , but red and white ones did have sensodraulic , late 83 , 1984

885 is an English design that goes back to the 74 series 574, 674 etc.
8 forward and 4 reverse gears with a clutchless spliter called torque amplifier which doubles all gears for a total of 16 forward 8 reverse. The TA doesnt wont take too much abuse and is a weak point.
Its common to see them locked up in high range.
Gears sticks are on the left hand side.
885 has conventional top link sensing and has a much lighter back end than an 856
With roughly half the lift capacity.

Both tractors have 540 and 1000 speeds through twin shafts

Surely all 856s were sensodrolic? A reg being the first though an early A 956 could well be long levers still. We had a number of C and D reg tractors none of which were centre drive, though the D reg had newer type synchro gearbox and Case style cut back bonnet.

So did the synchro gearbox come out when the red/black ones came out, and take it this was on the high/low/reverse,
When did they get 40k gearbox
Synchro on the range lever came out when they went to the long gear sticks on the last of the red and white models, 40k box came as an option at the same time i think but you won't see a side drive 40k in the UK only on the continent.
