Reeves just confirmed that Labour are putting VAT on Public school fees and the money used to prop up state education!
.....can she not see that the parents of Public school pupils already pay huges taxes .....which help to pay for state schools ...
Parents who have aspiration for their children are being penalised ....... WHY ?

Not a fan of private schools but isn't it like private healthcare, a necessary thing when the state hasn't the money to provide a good service for all because of the money it wastes & jealousy then comes into play!

Listened to an interview a couple of weeks ago. Edinburgh has a massive proportion of privately educated kids I think it was over 40%. The state schools there are already oversubscribed. This labour policy totally works on a theory that numbers of kids in education are dropping. It does not account for the number of parents that can only just afford it and at the same time are subsidising state education. Who then will want to put their kids in state schools.

There are a couple of private schools close to me. Both of which could be on sticky ground when the change comes in. At the same time the only state secondary that does not need a train or half hour bus/car journey to get to is full. There are no plans that i know to substantially increase its size but there are 200+ acres of houses being built a couple of miles from it. Nothing adds up

This is going to be interesting to watch.

Edinburgh has the highest proportion of privately educated kids in the UK, at between "25 to 30%".

A high proportion of kids go to private school because the existing Scottish state education system is a shambles, and the EIS (teachers union) have ScotGov by the balls, to the point that all extra curricular activities were cut out completely in the late 80's to reduce teachers hours.
Not so in private schools, they excel in extra-curricular activities, which is partly why rugby is well founded in Scottish private schools, but youth football in the state system is now practically non existent, which shows up every time the national side gets whipped in a international tournament.

Many private students are only there because their middle income families make a lot of sacrifices to give their kids a decent education.
Add in that most of the state schools are already at capacity, and Edinburgh is a ticking educational time bomb.

Do we ever build any new additional primary & secondary schools anywhere? Wasn't it the Tories that persuaded schools to sell their playing fields.

I read a piece last week, where a family were no longer going to be able to fund (2-3?) kids in Private education, so asked the Local Authority to find places for them. The LA was then being singularly unhelpful and making ridiculous offer of schools many miles away.... Demanded to know why they should be finding places for the children...

Mad, and something we will see more of I reckon.

Round here (Cambs) they regularly build new schools based on the predicted new housebuilding targets, the schools get built and the houses are usually 5 years behindf schedule, result lots of empty new school buildings.

On the subject of private schools, personally I'm not a fan, but the parents who pay have saved the state a fair wedge of cash as a result ( a quick check shows it costs the state arouind £7400 per pupil). The VAT not charged surely just reflects the saving to the state.

The present Govt don't like "private school priviledge" their actions though will radically reduce the number of children on scholarships and those of parents with more moderate incomes thus making the private schools even more exclusive which seems a bit of an own goal

As a parent of a SEND pupil at who has just started private school it's wrong, politics of envy. I agree that they probably shouldn't have charitable status but if they do this I hope VAT is going to be charged on university fees as well ! I work hard and so does my wife to provide my kids with the best education we can, the only high school my kids can go to, no other choices here, is at the bottom of the league tables and it's SEND provision is appalling. We do not have flash lifestyles and and it's a stretch. But we will still be able to just about afford it to send them both when my other starts next year
