Replacing an oil boiler.

Thinking of changing my oil central heating boiler. No where near gas, so what would be my other options. The farmhouse is on top of a hill in an exposed location. Can't keep the house warm enough in the winter . Got a wood burning stove ( efel 14kw put in early eighties) keeps the front room warm and not much else. Getting fed up of the wife moaning how cold the house can be.

What did you do?

Kingspan bonded plaster board dot and dabbed upstairs. Same material onto battens downstairs. Skimmed, 2 coats of Gyproc drywall sealer (for extra vapour barrier.

Big job as need new skirting boards, window reveals etc.

Pulled up the floor boards, strung a net over floor joists, fibreglass stuffed between joists, chipboard flooring refitted.

Expensive, but should be good for a couple of hundred years.

My sister fitted a boiler stove and heats her whole house with that, It's is fairly well insulated mind you (the house that is), however, if you had a stove working with the oil boiler (and a buffer tank maybe) you could probably set the boiler to only come in when it gets very cold, thus much reducing the oil consumption.

Works for her really well, with logs from the farm. She should have had a buffer tank installed with it however in my opinion. So that when the stove goes out overnight, it's charged the buffer for morning.

You need a stove that puts as much heat to the water as poss and only a small amount to the room.
Plumbing will be needed obviously.

i would advise putting in a senko cooker with back boiler if you wish to keep the price down and have access to logs. http://www.thebiomasshut.co.uk/Products/35kw-central-heating-cooker.html
About £2500 delivered providing 35 kw heat output.

New oil boiler will be much more efficient than the old one . Also consider looking at changing stove if it’s not putting much heat out . If not check that all the seals/rope is working as it should. Obviously you’re burning nice dry logs . Get a stove fan the circulate the air a bit
Get your central heating system flushed out chances are it’s full of sludge.
I’ve been down the route of oil boiler and wood burning link to heating and hot water. Keeping the stove going is like a extra job you can well do with out .

There was a solid fuel Rayburn cooker that also did the heating and hot water in our first house after putting up with it for a couple of years ripped it out and put in an oil boiler and an electric cooker best thing I ever did. I think people underestimate the constant work needed to keep these things going.
