Replacing an orbital unit

I need to take out the orbital unit in an old loading shovel as it drips oil when worked hard and warmed up. If I buy a new one is it just a case of remove old one and swap over or will the new one need setting up/bleeding etc?

I might take it up to the local mechanic first to see can he replace seals on anything like that in it.
if he does, when you refit it, keep your hands out of the steering wheel, because if it isn't reassembled correctly, it will turn into a motor and spin the steering wheel!

Having said that, I don't think there is anything complicated in replacing the seals, vague recollections of timing the lobes when you put it back together.

It's not a complex job if you have the correct tool for installing the main shaft seal. Also make sure you time it correctly when reassembling it or you'll end up with a spinning steering wheel 😮

In my opinion its a waste of time trying to reseal an orbitrol valve. They usually leak because the spool is worn in the body, you wont see any wear, but it will be there.

This, add to that you or your mechanic probably won't have the special tools for fitting the seal. So after spending time and money it will still leak. Find a specialist who offer an exchange unit, you will have some come back if they do it wrong.

Any recommendations for crowds that specialise in orbital units? Are they easy to identify?

A bit out of the loop these days, you could ask a friendly agricultural dealer if they have any contacts. Or white house products up in Scotland were good for pumps they may also do orbitrols or know who does.
