You were asking elementary questions as someone who has not been following earlier conversations that was why I gave you that link so as to answer all your questions. Now as pertains to the UK. There is isn’t much literature on this. This particular article will give you a whole broad idea of smallholder farmers in the UK.

I had read the earlier conversation. I considered that to be an interesting, but separate, debate.

I find it quite incredible that the document doesn't take into account one of the most environmentally beneficial roles of small farms in their basic scale of operations.
While small farms lack economies of scale, they also lack the accumulations of slurry and chemicals which could cause harm.
It also fails to understand and take account of larger farms harvesting a crop, many times the size of a small farm in one day.
Smaller farms will generally have smaller fields which adds costs to operations but provides enhanced environmental benefits.
What seems most perverse about the comparison of nature conservation between small and large farms is that it makes no allowance for the way schemes have been used and abused.
The fact arable farms which are larger and have had better options which are paying more money, will distort the 'conservation capital' data.

Although farming at scale whether for crops or livestock is more environmentally expensive, it has been found that large farms are more open to practice sustainability due to the availability of capital, technological know-how, and implications of their farming practices. While the average smallholder is averse to change. Many smallholders complain of non-availability of capital to embark on sustainable farming practices.
