Rewilding horse pastures?

There's a discussion on the point here:

Apparently the figure was arrived at by a housing consultant using some back of an envelope calculations. The consensus of the article is that 2% was pushing it, but that a quite surprising amount of land is indeed taken over by golf courses and gold related activities.

I think that you are correct with the golf course point of view, though obviously it is a pointless view as they must be of the chosen types, they can run on red diesel.... So there will be no rewilding necessary there sir.

Isn’t all the carbon in horses locked up though in the soil, as they’re all buried as pets in corner of said pony paddock 🤔🤷‍♂️
One of my fields had ponies on it for years, when we bought it and eventually got the ph up enough to make a reseed worthwhile, the chap ploughing it hanked up an old horse skull, buried a full 6” down.

He asked me what he wanted me to do, I told him to keep on ploughing. It’s quite a decent field now.

On a slight tangent, has anyone ever managed to get grazing on a golf course? There's a whopper I drive past near us, looks prime for some Belties or similar on all that rough stuff. Or is that part of the golf pitch?
We have a golf course on the Beverley Westwood, it’s a large area of common land grazed by cattle all summer, the greens have little fences round them, the whole place is wick with dog walkers also

We have a vegetarian couple who come for milk. They remind us they are vegetarian at any and every possible opportunity. They spent ages telling me about a rewilding project they had read about in the paper, how fantastic it was and how they would love the countryside around here to be completely rewilded. They asked if I'd consider doing it here, so I asked if they would consider changing their diet from vegetarian to eating mainly meat. They didn't understand so I pointed out that the only food to be produced on these rewilded farms is meat. You don't see any carrot fields being rewilded. If that's the system they wanted then that's the system they would have to support. They've never mentioned it again.
Tell you what @Tim G , if you stood for NFU president I’d have to seriously consider becoming a member again. Brilliant. You deserve a wider audience.

How about golf courses? Apparently 2% of the UK's land is covered in golf courses (this figure is subject to a considerable amount of debate) so how come there's no demands for them to be rewilded too?
Because the people who would be furious/ha ratio is a very large number whereas for farmers it’s tiny. Look no further than the simple maths.

You try and close a single golf club down and you’re already taking on a large number of people for one golf course.

Google tells me 111 acres is the average UK course size. x the 2500 someone posted earlier = 277,500 acres.

I used a recycled envelope for the purposes of this calculation. Other envelopes are available.

Why is this never discussed? Why is it always farming land that has to be re-wilded?

Is it because a lot of the people who support re-wilding also like horse riding. Surely a hobby shouldn't carry more weight than feeding a nation?
Does the fact that they don't claim finance have any bearing , I could have gone wild 20 years ago , taken the payments and turned the farm into a wild jungle, I chose not to ,no one was holding a gun to my head , I'm a bit out of it now but are their pistols now loaded and ready

How do you find out if there is a vegetarian / vegan in the room? Don't flap. They will tell you within the first 5 seconds of conversation

If you want something to boil your eyeballs with, it looks like Monbiot is on the go again...
