Roller Chain

Got 100H Rex chain on round baler. not a lot of wear on it but every now and again it breaks. always breaks while its netting the bale, The pins just shear in the middle, why? is it tempered that much it makes the pins really brittle, dropped the tension but still doing it, think that's 7 joining links in that chain now, the pins are that hard even a hacksaw wont look at them, so whats peoples thoughts, chain has done 12000 bales just. is it time for a whole new chain?

Lay it on floor and see if you can bend it " sideways " if that makes sense
It will show how worn it is, also hacksaw shouldn't hardly scratch it , the rollers and pins are hardened like bearings ( they are bearings)
Hope this helps

Ive been told 3% stretch is time to replace a chain,or lay it on the floor bend it sideways if it bends one inch in a foot of chain its knackered.I would have replaced it after the first or second break,if one pin has got weak they all will have.

Same here as one break unless it's a joining link the chain heads for scrap as they are not worth constantly repairing as life is far too short for stress like that!!!!!

well i suppose it probably should be changed, nothing worse than having it break when weathers as catchy as it is up here in Dumfriesshire, will manage now til the end of the season i hope as not much baling left to do,that chain will be under a bit stress as it works both front and back ends of the baler, its a Kuhn 2135, good baler but i suppose its like any other baler when they've 20,000 plus bales on it its about time to re-chain it all

My chain supplier tells me off for buying chains without considering the sprockets. "It's a system!" He says. Worn sprockets will wear a new chain very quickly. It is worth noting that he also sells sprockets...

If you replace the chains in good time the sprockets should last the life of the machine. It costs around £400 to re chain a Welger roller baler,a set of sprockets would be nearer £4k...

I'm not familiar with that baler but I'm guessing it has a long chain with lots of sprockets? My NH only has two sprockets per chain so the wear is more equal.
