Romney's to the acre.

Taking over small farm around 110acres soon .Retiring farmer carried 62suckers and calves for many years successfully. We want to carry flock of Romney ewes. Decent enough park ground around 400 feet in Dumfriesshire.Any ideas for stocking rates using fertilizers lime as required?

Piece of string time !!

I would start off at 3/ acre if the sheep are out grazing all year and no fertilizer. Any surplus summer grass can be made into silage/ hay for the lean winter months.

You can then up the numbers once you get to know the potential of the land or up the fertilizer.

Cheaper to have too much grass than not enough!

Winter carrying capacity will be your stocking limit, no doubt his sucklers where in the barn a lot and Romney's don't suit it.
