Roof trusses

Building a new house and in order to capitalise on space we’ve been given the option of 400mm centres at a cost of £1,400 more or loose roughly 2ft all round of our attic room and go for 600mm centres.
I’m swinging towards the 400’s as is the architect and builder but chippy mate says no sense just use the lost space as shelving etc and save the cash.
Thoughts?

Work it out as £/sq ft. If less than the rest of the house, go for it.

Always 400 centers ,and you will gain height in the room .
Also talk to the truss designer as they can add strength in odd ways to nake the room bigger

If I'm understanding this correctly, "chippy mate" proposes putting shelves between the thicker trusses? Sounds like a bad idea to me, you want the attic to be as air tight as possible, and that would make an impossible envelope to seal. The warm air will flow out your attic like an open chimney, causing all sorts of problems, heat loss being only one.

as I understand it but could be wrong here timbers are bigger for 600 meaning your bringing the standing room further into the room so use the space closer to the wall to fit units etc and not worry about head height

400 or 600mm centres is between joists.
How can that effect head room?

The only way to increase headroom possibly is to have raised collar trusses.

I presume these are attic trusses ,if you sqeeze the design ie ,bigger timeber 1or 2 degrees steeper ,400 centers ,the top tie can be higher
