running out of lamlac

About half the solids in cows milk compared to sheep I think. But I've reared lambs pretty well on cows milk from birth before. Some go a bit gutty but if you can get good quality milk and get a lot into them then it's fine.
Use lamlac most of the time now but I wouldn't be too worried about cows milk for a day

I have a dairy farming mate who annually has 20 or so cade lambs which he rears on cows milk only. They always look well on it.

No, no, no. As posted above, cow's milk is half the solids of sheep's milk. Lambs only grow on the solids, not the water. If you rear lambs on cow's milk they will not thrive and will go 'gutty'. It won't save any money if you aren't doing them as well and you are feeding them milk for longer.

I've seen plenty of cades done on cow's milk, and they do survive, but they are very poor compared to cades done properly.

@organic antares , it won't do them any harm short term, and certainly better than going without. If they're close to weaning, it would probably get them eating more pellets.

I've used bluecap before - Was told by the vet not to change milks once the lamb settles to one, tend to find abit loose back end on cows milk for a few days but settle and are fine afterwards - changing feeds is more damaging than doing the cows milk constantly. - I've added some double cream before to the odd smaller one but otherwise fine.

When do people wean their bottle lambs?
I try and wean asap and accept lower growth, as its not worht the time;

I ad-lib (machine) and wean at 5 weeks, hopefully just before losing any to redgut. Growth rate in those first few weeks is the most efficient FCE you will ever get, with milk solids converted at near 100%. I weighed my December cades just after weaning (for Signet 8 week wts). They had averaged 400g/day, weaned onto ad-lib pellets at 5 weeks, which was as good as the suck lambs.
