I am taking on about 3 acres of ground that belonged to a neighbour as we are swapping some fields around so we each have all our ground in one block. This particular area consists of two fields one of which is covered in rushes, the other is grass of sorts and thistles which stock will not eat. This ground has been neglected for over 30 years and the last time I can remember it being ploughed was in the mid 60s.
I had it sprayed last week with Gallup 360 and intend to have it cut with a flail mower. How long do I need to wait before I cut the rushes. I know for grass it can be cut after 5 days, is it the same time for rushes. The rushes were cut with a flail mower last October.
As the ground has not been worked for years I do not really want to plough it as most of the fertility in the soil will be in top 2 inches. Would it be sensible to power harrow it after having lime spread on it to create a tilth, broadcast the grass seed and roll?
Would the amount of crap that has been harrowed in affect the growth of the new seed?
Your thoughts and comments please.
