Same Explorer Gears

Evening all
My same explorer 95 is getting tricky to get into 1st gear - I'm thinking it needs the linkage adjusting as it's done nearly 8000hrs now. Anybody have any experience of doing this?
Thanks.

Start off by lubricating all the linkages, get someone in cab while you're underneath with an oil can. Lubricate the pivots and the lever pivot balls.

First gear is the first to suffer with stiff or sloppy linkages. After oiling them all stay underneath and study hiw first gear is selected, gear lever is going towards seat therefore linkage underneath is reversed and is going out towards the wheel. A pivot pin, 13mm and 17mm spanner may need nipping up.

I've never stripped one down and found worn selectors on the 1,2,3,4,5. Synchros tend to be worn on 4th gear as it's the one that takes the brunt when downshifting under load etc. I've also seen the gear levers bend towards the driver over time and therefore not getting enough travel. Study it hard before delving into the box

The selectors do wear I'm afraid and the linkages wear and bend.
Another common problem is the roll
Pins on the bottom of the gear lever breaking

First gear is on its own in front of the box right behind or even partly a part of the powerspeed/agroshift unit. Never had any issues with said fork for first gear. Linkages as you say can wear but if I was a betting man I'd bet that the problem lies with the gate not coming across enough to select first. The grub screw on the firk can drop out aswell but that woukd be no selection at all for said gear!! Happens more with the suttle fork though

We had problems with selecting 2nd and 4th on a 5speed box, dealer changed linkage under cab, great improvement. Now seems to have got graunchy changing forward/reverse, I'm thinking syncro gone done

Yes a syncro issue i would say
If you go into box have a look at top gear they have a habbit of stripping teeth they are a thin gear if alot of road work has been had out of it this was an issue with the later ones anyway the locktight on the gearbox bolts is bloody hard stuff also done a few over the years good tractors really.

This is really helpful, thanks. I have been underneath and lubed up the linkage - that has helped the shifting generally , especially the range selector, which I've had to get both hands to previously!! First is still the problem though - it does feel like things just don't line up. Have to set her moving in 2nd, then drop her into 1st on the rock. The shuttle does crunch a bit here and there if I'm clumsey on the clutch (still on original clutch after 7600hrs of largely loader work! - I was worried when we bought her new as the clutch squaked from day one! It is juddery now though, so can't be much wear left on it.
4th gear lines up fine but has always been a pig to shift into - maybe the synchro has been damaged fom day one. Could never downshift from 5th under load without crunching, so have always dropped into 3rd instead - bit of a fiddle!!

Off the top of my head I can't renember which one but one of the linkages or ball joints may beed a nip up. Study again how the gate is moved over to see if you can gain a bit more movement through the linkages. Did you notice where the selector for the 1-5 enteres the side of the gearbox casting? It's kind of behind the steel cover that shields the solenoids etc. Did you see the cup and ball in the linkage aswell? Nearly directly under the actual gear lever! This benefits from some oil. Also you can lift the rubber gaitor inside abd there's a pivot ball on the lever clamped down by three 13mm (m8) bolts, drop a few bits if oil there and study for wear aswell.

All the clutches squeeked from new when they moved over to the cerametallic type clutch plates (paddle style) so was nothing to worry about. Synchro issues on 4th gearbwould be a crunch as opposed to stiff selection.

As I say, I have been under the tractor - not really sure what linkage does what as there's quite a lot of it to study!! I really don't think it's an oiling issue anymore. When you say "nip up" do you mean adjust threads? I have removed a plastic box that was covering gear linkage stuff(to apply oil)
When the tractor was quite new, we changed the back end oil and out with the oil came a small piece of bearing shell - which filled us with dread!! She's gone on to do nearly 8000hrs with no bother. We then thought that maybe they broke a bearing when making her in the factory and failed to get it all out! Anyway, she's done plenty of heavy work - ploughing, lugging trailers etc, so couldn't have been much.
Does the 5spd box pull out from the front if the tractor is split? If so maybe we should yank it out when she needs a clutch. Can you get reconditioned boxes for them? I remember that the box is a compact unit - from seeing them on a trip round rugby with the farm machinery club!!
Lastly, what sort of job is it to put a new synchro on the shuttle? - not that i need to yet!
She's been a good tractor - great engine
Are you a sdf dealer/mechanic?
Thanks again

Ideally you need someone to wiggle while your under it, by nipping up I mean tighten a pivot bolt. I'm still fairly certain that it's the gate not going over far enough!!!

Unfortunately you need to split the rear axle back to get the box out, box comes out complete to tackle on the bench, nothing out of the ordinary. Synchro unit and fork for the forward and reverse, new 4wd coupling maybe, shaft seals and orings is a two day job taking it steadily. I served my apprenticeship on these years ago therfore know them fairly well!!!

We couldn't select one of the gear ranges on our Lambo 105.

It seemed serious but turned out to be a tiny stone resting in the gate or part of the external gear lever linkage on the outside of the gearbox under RHS of cab. Flicked the tiny stone out with an electronics screwdriver and it worked perfectly again.

You need a real good look in those linkages with a torch and mirror before raving everything apart.

I just come across this old thread about my same not going into 1st very well. Turns out it was the clutch going!! She's on 9600hrs now! Good old girl. It is having new rear wheel bearings though - I thought the rims bolts were loose, but it was bearings!

Can I please give this thread a bump!

A while back, months but only a few hours ago, the range lever suddenly lost its "gate", that is it will move sideways while in a cog. No major drama there, just the balljoint had popped off due to wear. (But I could still find and select the ranges fine, mainly because I used to drive a Morris 1100 and know how to pat the lever around looking for gears)

Today.
Today I needed her to tow a vehicle stuck in a snow drift, I'd been putting about the yard in N but when I went to select V to head down the road, the whole range lever went slack.
Eventually found L and got it out of my gateway, but I can't figure out what's behind the little plate (not the cover that holds all the crud around the solenoids etc, I removed that one).
The linkage hangs from a balljoint and it appears a little tang on the right-angle pivot engages in something behind that plate - is that right?

I thought I'd ask the experts who've played with these before, and found this thread.

Hopefully @Mur Huwcun and @REStracTORATION are logged on today 😀

All I can think of is if the roll pin in the main pivot ball joint has brocken (bottom of gear stick at cab floor level). or a linkage has come off, there’s a few held on with stepped bolts. Never had any bother with the range stick or the internals!!
