Same Lamborghini 80 Transmission Wind Up?

Hey up, not been about for a while, hope all well!

The old Lambo 80 yard tractor (40x40 box) has developed an odd fault. Running up the road it appears to be winding up in the back end somewhere - basically you can feel distinct drag and the thing labouring for no reason. Can also sense a bit of rear wheel scrubbing when turning tight in yard, if you knock it out of gear it doesn’t coast along too well either.

Had it up on blocks earlier - checked solenoids, manually spun wheels etc - nothing obvious. One thing I did notice is a that wheels rotate slightly (but can be stopped) when running with shuttle and N, L or SL (not V though) range engaged but no speed selected on 1-5 stick - clearly shouldn’t be any drive in this scenario should there!?

All very odd, no warning, odd noises or similar, just started doing it the other day on way back from other yard. Clutch feels fine, problem is now constant, hot or cold oil no difference.

Any thoughts before I get someone to pull the arse end out of it ?‍♂️

Thanks

Is the diff lock stuck in ?

No, wheels rotating as you’d expect with it in / out. Solenoid working.

It’s a similar symptom manoeuvring in yard though - although wind up / drag on road in a straight line is more severe than I’d expect with that.

Is it 4wd? Most probably stuck in 4wd and with worn tyres? Are you familiar with the 4wd engagement mechanism?

Yes 4wd,

Fronts are better than rears.

When I had it running up on blocks 4wd was definitely going in and out, solenoid is working. It’s engaged with that little fork under the plate in middle is it.

I’m baffled by why there would be a ‘bit’ of drive in the lower ranges when no speed selected as described? Doesn’t this suggest all is not well inside?

Could it be locking up in 4wd for some reason as you suggest and then wont come out with its weight on the wheels?

Yes 4wd disengaged by the little fork, the fork can be worn but if it’s behaving on blocks.... The bit of drive is just drag in the transmission, shows up more in lower range as it’s easier to turn the wheel. You could drop the prop off ust to make sure, does it spin one wheel if you stamp on the other brake pedal in a low range or try to pull itself forward using front wheels?

I’ll have to give that a try tomorrow. If 4wd is out and still getting this drag then we almost certainly have issues inside the rear diff or box don’t we?

I have had it on the other one years ago where pressure was dropping on that hydraulic circuit and 4wd would then engage but then you lost high on the splitter too and it was only with hot oil causing an internal leak.

Can't really think what would cause drag in the transmission in every gear though, diff lock could be playing up maybe

Well, the drag is most pronounced in top on road - but she’s only 80hp after all!

It definitely isn’t ‘rolling’ as it should when knocked out of gear either though, say when coasting into a yard. Plus this odd scuffing when tight turning in lower gears...

Odd.

I’ll get the prop off tomorrow and continue the trials!

Thanks for your input thus far.

Is the handbrake coming off cleanly? It acts forward of the diff on my 105 so jacking up and spinning each rear wheel independently would not tell you if it was dragging. If works just near the 4wd engagement splines so might feel like 4wd wind up.
Probably not, but might be worth a look.

Bottom plate off, covered in oil as usual but success - one very badly worn selector fork visible.

Think we’ve been having some ‘intermittent’ 4wd engage and disengage here.

Crows foot spanner on an extension bar job to get this off if memory serves - anyone remember what size this is as who knows where the one I used last has gone!

Cheers

You need to stop completely to engage or disengage with the mechanical fork setup or the fork moves to disengage but windup keeps the selector in place. Have you upgraded to the twin fork setup? No need for crow foot, you can get a spanner up there, slide the shaft out the side for a bit of wiggle room

Great thanks. Yes updated part requested!

Good job Huw and TFF

Anyone know where the shuttle neutral sensor or whatever mechanism it is on this old tractor?

Post this repair (fingers crossed - was fairly hellish) it seems to not want to start on key - I assume I have pinched a wire or something? Previously you had to move shuttle through a gear and back to neutral before starter would engage. Curiously I can’t see any wires etc at all anywhere near the shuttle linkage area though?

Thanks

It’s slightly more back than where shuttle shaft enters the transmission housing, kind of in between the low/high linkages
