Bought a few tins of Sandtex over a couple of years ago to do the outside of the house, with one thing and another the job didn't get done and we are now looking at getting a decorator to do the job next year. Had a couple of people round for quotes and apparently they won't use it because of the following reasons:
It's old - paint has been stored in the workshop, turned every few months and opening one tin and given a stir looked OK to me.
It's the wrong sort of Sandtex (fine), we have an old house which apparently expands and contracts with temperature, need an elastomer Sandtex (which is twice the price - I have used Sandtex in the past without any problems as long as the original coating is sound.
There are different paints which do just as well - perhaps there are, but I've got a shed full of the stuff.
We can use your paint but can't guarantee it if it starts to fall off after a couple of years...
Feel I'm being conned here but perhaps these are genuine reasons ? I just don't like having to pay extra to use their paint.

Sounds more like they dont want to do it as they wont make any profit ,,they want to flog you another brand which will be the same as what you have ,just under another name and then they will ad X £ % to it to make it look really good paint

So we opened a tin and after a good stir it looked OK to me, I haven't used any for years. Painter points to skin on the inside of the lid and says it's frost damage, can't be used, or if they did use it, another coat would be needed so extra labour and no guarantee....

I can’t see how another coat would be beneficificial if the paint is frost damaged. According to this is would go clumpy, ropey etc and from your description of it (and that you’ve protected it from frost) I can’t see that is your issue.

All paint probably develops a skin over time.

I’d certainly be wanting a second or third opinion/quote. Could ever ask a local paint store for their opinion - I’m sure they’d be honest and advise in the hope you would appreciate it and as a result go to them if you wanted more.

Just take an hourly rate off the painter and tell him no guarantee required.

Edit, or if you're really keen to get it right, and trust the painter, get him to do it with the good stuff and then flog your tins on Gumtree.
