Sawdust to replace straw

We put in about a foot deep and going to clean out as needed. I think 5 ton of sand is about the same as a ton of lime

So how much sand would you need to put a foot deep over say 60'x20' ? Sorry for all the stupid questions.

We have just cleaned out along the feed fence for the first time @Chae1 hopefully it will a few weeks yet till we have to clean the whole thing out. Cattle are very clean on it still, how are you doing with it?

So far so good. Still looks same as day they went in. We sent some of our sand away to be analysed when soil testing so be interesting to see what it comes back as.

Sand takes longer to work than lime when applied to land

We are just digging out a hole in the ground with our digger so will be going back on same ground it came out of. Will continue to soil test regularly.

Local skinflint here needed a load of sand to mix concrete but came up with the bright idea of driving to the beach one night thinking he would get it for free, shoveled it on by hand, took a few hrs but when he went to leave the trailer sank and he had to tip it all off

Do you keep adding to the sand? Or have to clean out and start again after so long?

The sand will stay clean for a few weeks depending on how heavy stocked the cattle are on it. You can add more sand on top and keep scraping the muckiest stuff away from the front. Eventually you'll probably clear the whole out and start from scratch again when it builds up. Don't let the sand get too mucky 'til you top up again.

a lot of this is Tommy Rot . it does lower the nitrogen a little but long term it's give far more benefit thsnnit takes out

It's when it's ploughed under it takes out nitrogen from the soil. When it's on top it uses atmospheric nitrogen to break down.
(So I've read, I'm only beginning to get really interested and read up on it. Our muck we dump out on the field leaves a lot to be desired too seemingly)
