Scanning

Sorry if this has already been asked but what breed ewes are you using, as said seems excellent level of twins as opposed to loads of singles and triplets, or work!!!

They are all mules at the moment, My most recent are white face Welsh mules and I have some cheviot mules but a lot are still Nc mules although I am moving away from them. Last year I got very similar percentage of twins. Only my 2nd year with this flock, but by keeping every ewes individual scanning performance, and adding any info such as lame thin etc, I can make the call if getting all my mules as a base flock from the same farm and trying different breeds to create a cross replacement, or go back to buying in all sorts from up north again. Time will tell! And a random bit of info last years singles scanned this year at 187, the twins did 197 and last year's triplets did 212 this year.

Scanned main flock today............overall average 178% Made up of :-
68 Mules 13 trips 48 twins 6 singles 1 empty 207%
120 Tex x Mules 9 trips 72 twins 33 singles 6 empty 170%
38 Tex/Mule shlgs 0 trips 22 twins 15 singles 1 empty 155%
Also :-
57 Tex/Mule hoggs 20 twins 29 singles 8 empty 121%
Plus a few earlies - just starting now :-
37 3/4 Tex 23 twins 13 singles 1 empty 159%
27 Lincolns 6 twins 21 singles 0 empty 122% No wonder they're a rare breed :banghead:

Too many empty just takes the gloss off ! Reasonably happy as none were properly flushed - all running on stewardship grass on local arable farms. Currently, our lambs out of mules, are making about 6-7% less per kg liveweight than our tighter skinned lambs out of Tex/Mules and 3/4 Texels. If it wasn't for the extra disease challenge of more bought in sheep we would probably be better off running all Mules and having 23% more lambs.

A very pleasing scanning yesterday, much higher than I have done before... Main flock has improved possibly due to moving lambing back between 1 and 2 months so that they all lamb outside in April, but they are a bunch of very experienced sheep so you would expect scanning to get higher with older ewes too.

Main Flock (Mostly 4 Shear and Older Texel and Charollais X)

Singles 63
Twins 381
Triplets 60
Empty 2

Scanning 199%
Twinning 75%

Highlander (3 Shear)
Single 35
Twins 141
Triplets 10
Empty 2

Scanning 185%
Twinning 75%

Highlander Shearlings (¾ having reared lambs)

Empty 5 :(
Singles 26
Twins 76
Triplet 4

Scanning 171%
Twinning 68%

Disappointing to see so many empty ewes, most empties were covered in a rainbow of different raddle colours so it wasn't for lack of trying. I did leave a few ewe lambs with their lambs on past 12 weeks, when the others were weaned, so I will have to see if that's what has happened here... if I have recorded it anywhere.

Highlander Ewe Lambs

Singles 125
Twins 51

Scanning 129%
Twinning 29%
Another 37 Empty which is also a bit disappointing, possibly reared by ewe lambs and checked by being weaned early.

Hi all,
As part of my final year project at Hadlow College in Kent I am carrying out a questionnaire on wormer resistance in the UK sheep industry and I would really appreciate it if anybody keeping sheep could fill it out. It will take less than 5 minutes to fill out and it will really help me with my project.

Also I scanned in this morning at 169%
5 empty
45 singles
95 twins

Just had ours scanned
100 Tex x mules to an aberfield ram 184%
55 Cheviot ewes to a texel ram 145%
110 tex ewes to a texel ram 152%
100 tex ewes to highlander ram 148%

Pleased with scanning results, although hoped for a little bit of a higher percentage with the highlander, our first time using. Thought they would have scanned a bit higher.

Were they the same sort of ewes as those that went to the Texel ram, which had a similar %age? The Highlander ram won't get more lambs, but his daughters might/should.

Yeah they were same sort of ewes. Changing the system on our farm and looking to go into highlanders, if they do what they say on the tin. Impressed with the highlander and aberfield condition after coming in from the ewes. Our texel Rams dropped a lot of body condition but Innovis Rams looked like when we sent them out. Plus had no empties from them looking forward to seeing how the lambs do.

Nothing on fire but should make for an easyish lambing, mostly texel x some mules and mashams in there as well

494 hill ewes 132%

165 ground ewes 151%, about 100 of these being Berrichon,Meatlinc or Suff x Welsh

35 welsh 172% - should be on hill but keep breaking into neighbour off hill,( though not much stopping them)

22 barrens
139% overall

better than last year by 3%, but a bit below our best of 150%,3 years ago
disappointed with ground ewes cos they're looking well
about 400 of hill ewes were tupped on hill the rest in with suff or Meatlinc tups for prob. 4-5 weeks then out to hill

Scanned today, Shetland x cheviot and shet /chev x tex did 177%, 7% triplets and 2.4% empty.
50 mostly texel ewe lambs tupped by new charmoise ram, @b12mct, 9 empty, 34 single, 7 twins, 96%
I'm really pleased nice number of lambs. Little charmoise tup is an ugly beggar but hes done his job!
All sorted and onto winter fields.

Great result well done. When you say you got rid of ewes not performing, do you get rid of ewes that keep having singles? I started my flock in 2011 and have been trying to improve things as u learn. I have been considering doing this in the future but wonder if it is a bit OTT. I have been only keeping ewe lambs from perfect pairs for the last three years. Last years shearling scanned over 180% which is significantly better than previous years so it seems to be a good strategy
I was told that twinning is not very hereditary but tripleting is.
Twinning more to do with nutrition.
After scanning last year we kept the couples and singles separate and when we scanned last week last year's couples scanned 184% and last year's singles scanned 176% so I think that proves the point.
Also bought a flock of 100 Easycare ewes last year which had all scanned singles and these scanned 166% this year.

They are all destined to be sold with lambs at foot in may with any luck. They Av about 55kg at the end of November. Tried weighing the hoggs scanned with twins today as we bought them home but the trailers were blowing about on the weighbridge so couldn't get a fair reading. I would guess they are pushing 60kg by now. Havnt tupped our ram breeding hoggs as we will sell one or two as shearlings.
