Sorry if this has already been asked but what breed ewes are you using, as said seems excellent level of twins as opposed to loads of singles and triplets, or work!!!
Scanned this morning
250 ewes texel cross 186%
0__10 4%
1__54 21%
2 __147 59%
3__ 39 16%
48 ewe lambs texel 92%
0 __15 31%
1__ 22 46%
2 __11. 23%
Happy enough. Glad I don't have mulesYour happy with that, stock up on the lamb powder!
Just had ours scanned
100 Tex x mules to an aberfield ram 184%
55 Cheviot ewes to a texel ram 145%
110 tex ewes to a texel ram 152%
100 tex ewes to highlander ram 148%
Pleased with scanning results, although hoped for a little bit of a higher percentage with the highlander, our first time using. Thought they would have scanned a bit higher.
I was told that twinning is not very hereditary but tripleting is.Great result well done. When you say you got rid of ewes not performing, do you get rid of ewes that keep having singles? I started my flock in 2011 and have been trying to improve things as u learn. I have been considering doing this in the future but wonder if it is a bit OTT. I have been only keeping ewe lambs from perfect pairs for the last three years. Last years shearling scanned over 180% which is significantly better than previous years so it seems to be a good strategy
I thought most farmers would keep there pure texels and even beltex x lambs till gimmers before lambing. Yours must be a fair size?Scanned hoggs today, 1/2 + 3/4 + 7/8 bred beltex, pure Texels, few pure charolais and some mules. 116%. 65 twins, 127 singles and 30 geld.
