I trained birds for falconry (catching things, not the model aircraft stuff you see at shows!) all my life and the idea that eagles won't take lambs is quite ridiculous to me. It seems equally ridiculous to introduce eagles where there is sheep farming and not expect conflict.

It's been admitted that eagles take lambs on the West of Scotland but explaining that away by saying the conditions are harsher and natural prey scarcer just doesn't wash. Predators prey on what suits them best and that's going to be the easiest kill and the biggest meal. Why chase a rabbit when it can easily take a nice fat dozy lamb?

These birds were introduced on a whim with no thought given to any of the mechanics of how they were to survive or feed, the success of these birds is a real shock to rspb as there was absolutely no thought given to any kind of exit strategy. These birds are at the top of the food chain and have no predator apart from man. There numbers are getting out of control as can be seen by the reports coming in now of birds dying of starvation.
