Seen many hedgehogs?

'Cos I havent seen any here for years. Went on a short course over the weekend and was surprised by the number of hogs visiting urban gardens. There are plenty of gaps in hedges, gates etc and am surprised that a hog wouldnt find food here.

Def need to attract more around the veg patch for the summer for my slug work. Anyone got any experience of attracting and keeping them - obv can can get boxes.

Heard an awful sound outside last spring at about 1am squealing then coughing, then heavy panting, looked out couldn't see anything, 5 minutes later could hear squealing, Mrs was getting in a panic, I went downstairs and got the search light and scanned it along the lane, and saw 3 hedgehogs, two that were sha*ing were making the squealing noise, and the one watching was panting heavily, I walked towards them and got within 3 feet then they all buggered off!!! Haven't seen any baby ones about.

If your misses had a coat like that on wouldn't you squeal?

You're in an area where even the kids in school have TB. I suspect you have badgers as others above have been alluding to. If you have badgers you won't have hogs, they eat them very effectively.

A small dose of metaldehyde will kill a dog, guess how much to nail a hedge pig!
It is likely to be gone by 2020 if not before, as in Chlorpyrifos, then the numbers will increase.
They are also a delicacy for badgers apparently so it will not all be Meta at fault.

You what???? Never gone down with TB in this area unless you know our area well. Last time I checked the kids they seemed well. Yes there are some in the woods with badgers but surely there on this farm with hedges - lots of natural woodlands protection in fences got to be some hogs about?

This is one we found in the middle of a forestry track after a nasty storm. Almost dead and hypothermic. Managed to nurse him up from 200 gramms to just over a kilo before bedding him down in the cellar for winter. He gained a friend when I almost drove over one in the barn after moving the bales he was sleeping under. Both came through the winter happy and healthy and returned to the wild. We gave them a paint mark and used to see them around regularly.

there seems to be some evidence that Hogs are immune to slug pellets.
Very dubious, I think. A collie and its pup licked a few meta pellets off the axle etc on a quad which had been on a spraying job in between and it nailed them both. Dose per kg would be very much lower than achieved by hog in a field grazing an application. Slux Derrix etc would probably be ok though.

We've got three hedgehog guests staying with us at the moment. About a fortnight ago we looked outside at approx 8pm and on the lawn were three large hedgehogs. It was very frosty and cold and these hedgehogs were not moving so we were able to walk right up and scoop each one up, pop them in a cat box and bring them indoors to warm up. The following day we took them over to the stables put them in individual long boxes with straw and we have been feeding them up every evening and waiting until it becomes frost free before letting them go again.

We often have hedgehogs wintering with us .... we are like a 5* b&b with evening meal  ... and so I can't help wondering if these three have at some point stayed with us before or if they are just used to coming in to the garden because we do leave food out for any wandering hedgehogs.
