Self Propelled Sprayer Problem

We were out spraying last week with our self propelled sprayer when it stopped suddenly. The engine appeared to stall as though it was finding running too hard. It would not restart immediately but did restart an hour later and drove home fine though ran hot and appeared to pressurize her water system.

Running at tick over in the yard she gave a constant stream of bubbles in the expansion tank so we changed the head gasket assuming that was the problem. This appeared to fix the problem and after running her up and down the road a couple of times "just to be sure" we set off spraying again. After an hour she did exactly the same again, stopping suddenly and refused to restart. By the time the driver had walked home (no phone!) it was dark so nobody has been back for a look.

My question is could the problem be pump or hydraulic motor related or is it a classic seized engine? I sort of know my way around an engine but the hydraulics are a mystery to me.

She is an Evrard with Poclain hydraulics and a deutz 6 cylinder water cooled engine.

Any ideas gratefully received.

It would have to be one hell of a hydrostatic transmission fault, if you anchor a machine down and put the stick forward to load the swash on in road speed, you can pull the engine down without stalling it usually, as it just blows the main relief valve! What model of Deutz is it?

Its a deutz bfm6 1012. The same as in deutz agrotron tractors, it's only about 130 Hp and has always been gutless once the transmission has soaked up most of the power. It has only done 4000 hours but has to be screaming to make the thing move.

It sounds like you do have a transmission fault, but I don't think that's your problem with this issue, I don't know enough about the 1012 engine to give advice as we (SAM ltd) use the 2012, I do know there have been issues with corrosion on some of the 2012 units and Deutz are saying it's due to customers not changing coolant, but the issues I know of have been oil cooler related, dumping oil in the water or water in the sump.

Hi

Have heard of an Agrofarmer motor being all glued up due to coolant leak

Has it used coolant in the past?

Never noticed it using coolant, but after the first time she stopped the coolant level was low but we put that down to the head gasket

We had a look this morning and she is not seized (can be turned with a bar) but will not turn over on the starter. I have ordered a new starter as I am suspicious of the old one. On these machines the starter is boxed in behind the rad which is mounted on the side of the engine so I think it might have suffered when she got hot.

Without being able to turn her over, I cannot do much so am now waiting for a starter.

Walked 500m over a sodden field with tools and new starter this afternoon. I thought I'll just give her a try first and she started first turn of the key. Drove her home (several miles) flat out and left her ticking over in the yard for half an hour while I had a good look round. On the road she had plenty of power and pulled well up a couple of hills. She never got hot, smoked or did anything strange. The heater got warm and the rad gave off some heat so water must be circulating. There was no pressure in the expansion bottle. Bit of smoke from the breather but not terrible. With her running I took the rocker cover off and could see oil running down the rockers so she is pumping oil.

After running for probably an hour in total I stopped her and now the starter will not turn her over, just clicks again. I am going to change the starter in the morning. Where do I go next maybe look at the turbo?

Long shot. Try a jump lead from the battery earth direct to the starter motor casing, dodgy earth caught us out once on a SP with a well suspended engine.
If you connect the jump leads direct to the starter motor does it start when hot?

The problem was?

Still not sure really what the problem was/is. We changed the filters and the starter, cleaned up the earth strap and tried again. After running her for a bit we found a tiny leak on a fuel bleed off pipe, so my current theory is that she was getting a bit of air into the fuel lines.

Fingers crossed she has sprayed three loads now without any more trouble.

Thanks to everybody for their help!
