Self Set Crop

What would be the problems with leaving self set oats to grow ? OSR failed and enough volunteers that give a good cover. Black grass is our biggest problem. Ground too wet to rip up and start again for at least 2 - 3 DRY weeks, so after the £££ loss on OSR can we do any good with what we have ? Could we expect 30cwt to 2t ? Thanks

There was a thread on leaving OSR volunteers a while ago. Royalties seemed to be an issue.

There is a great looking field of volunteer WW near my yard. I would be tempted.

Have you seen The Big Bad Mouse lately?

Aha......Oho...........marks in the snow..........

I think you have answered problem number 1. Blackgrass. Problem two would be aphid-borne disease, depending on what insecticides you got on the rape. Do some maths - you are going to want two fungicides and a PGR, plus some fert. Given a potential BG carry-over, and those BG are not going to be small and sweet, is 2t/ac at say £180/t enough compensation for you? The oats will tiller nicely but if you have ever seen a well-established BG plant with little crop competition and a big slug of nitrogen, you may think again.
