selling up

We are thinking of maybe selling up but would prefer to find somebody who could use 100 acres of grass so we can stay here. Very few decent houses for sale anyway and none would be as cheap to run as the place we have now.

At least the civil servant doesn't have to stick his arm up a cow's @RSE to earn his money. Gets up 9am, stroll down for the papers, golf in afternoon, grandkids whenever they want.
But would you really want to be a civil servant for your career???
To have spent your entire working career in a job that odds was entirely pedantic box ticking and ultimately unproductive saying either "yes" or "no" like a performing seal to those supposedly superior isn't really "living" is it???

We’re currently going through the process of selling up. Made the decision for a number of reasons. No family wanting to carry on farming. Both my Dad and Grandad barely touched retirement because of cancer so it makes you take stock.
I’m only 47 but didn’t want to carry on chasing my tail, investing heavily in buildings etc. Would sooner have weekend to watch my sons play football.
Dairy farming isn’t what it used to be either. The ever increasing regulation and red tape has dampened my love for farming which is the sad part.
Exactly the same situation here!!!

I would definitely be interested in a conversation with you. But in all honesty you're more likely to get the best cash from someone wanting dairy dry stock grazing.

I aim to stop milking cows before I’m 50,my biggest concern is doing it tax efficiently,I may sell some land to reduce my mortgage repayments but selling up completely is never going to happen.
How old are you now?

Tax efficiency wise. Have you thought about a share milkers?

Just gone 47 this week,my high input high output system doesn’t suit having a share milker, beside I’m too much of a control freak,if I wasn’t living in the yard I could do it,trouble is I’d get way more letting my modern buildings for industrial,my new silo barn is 260’x120’ clear span,it’s worth a huge amount in rent alone.

My old man and uncle sold up few years ago… 10 acres for houses, sent the dairy cows up the road… rented the unploughable grass out too a dairy farmer not far away… bought a combine fit for 3000 acres for there 400 acres and then they both plough and drill OSR, barley and wheat in September/October then jump on the next plane out of here too there villas in Portugal and Spain and stay there until the agronomist rings to say there’s some spraying or fert needs putting on… they’ll come back, spread the fert and spray, have a few rounds of golf, go down the rugby club and get pee'd and then get the plane back out again… probably spent 60 days in the country last year each 😂 seems like best of both worlds too me… can’t be great for my inheritance but Christ it looks fun 😂

What are actually numbers , bbc farming quotes 10k for arable 7 for grass? There’s got to be a fair amount of variation ? Where the market at ? I’m tempted to list 40 acres pp adjoining forest at a daft price to see if there is any demand , or more to see if all the stories of mega sealed bids are true

39.5acres for sale near me £12500/ac currently in grass
A bigger block also ranging between £11k and £12.2k per acre.

If you end up with a house and a million quid, it's only going to give you the equivalent pension of a medium ranking civil servant.

I love the sun reporter shite🤣
I thought my description of an average day for a retired civil servant on £40k was pretty accurate
