I am very often wrong, but I believe farming could be about to enter one of its best phases in recent history and the thought of being properly rewarded for the work we are doing will make the job seem a whole lot better to a lot of people and hopefully make it more attractive to future generations.
Hopefully but how much longer do we wait 6 months or 6 years

If f the sh!t really does hit the fan with food shortages we could be in for a good few years.

If they’ve got the cash no reason they can’t have a go.

Main reason many are feeling like they’ve had enough is the returns versus the capital employed, soaring input prices ain’t helping
The step change in input prices is certainly focusing a few minds.

The certainty now is there’s a high chance of working in conventional farming and not seeing a reward at year end.

Something will change and it won’t be an increase in food production.

Farming in a sustainable fashion will be more pertinent than ever and especially from a financial perspective.

Cash is one thing opportunities are another. A bit of help from the older generation is needed. Part of the reason farming is sidelined is the lack of young voices. The Vegan/climate change gang have the young ears farming needs find a farming spokesman who is down with kids and that’s unlikely the way things are.

I would miss pottering around in the garden on a Sunday afternoon.
Just my garden is a bit bigger and the shovel doesn’t give me back ache.

Alot of the reason I'm fed up is that I'm in my mid forties and I seem to have not done much with my life in comparison with others of my age who work in agriculture and other jobs, I have a lovely wife and 2 great kids, but are I'm completely underfilled when I see others around about, with there multiple foreign holidays, time for nice hobbies and what seems to be better lives and do much less work ! Bit of jealousy and thinking the "grass is greener" but I've had to work since I was sixteen full time apart from working abroad for a couple of months when I was 19. Tired of being a "asset rich cash poor" farmer ! I would like to not feel guilty about watching my son play rugby/cricket on a Sunday, be able to take my wife away on a break now and again without it being a major issue. Just to live the life of what others seem to be able to do ! I love farming but not the life and family politics that go with it !

The theme I get from this thread is there’s a lot of us farmers out there fed up with the way government have sidetracked our industry.

It’s going to take an awful lot of lolly to tempt us back to busting a gut and shoving cheap food out of the farm gate!
Not sure if government have sidetracked us. Often feels like they've sent every leech our way to take a few quid of us at every opportunity so we end up supporting all the numptys, in made up jobs and departments rather than the government giving them dole money..

Try not to get too bothered by the politics and opinions of others..many are pillocks who wish for the same as yourself but didn't have the spine to vocalise it or do it...sounds like you're on the right track

When I go to check that mum is still safely at rest in the churchyard, I walk past the rather sunken gravestone of a farmer who was the local bigwig when we were children. He once boasted at an NFU meeting that he was going to farm all the land between the two nearest towns, including our patch. On his stone, his epitaph just reads "Tenant of XXXXXX farm for 40 years" and I think "That is the last thing I would want engraved on my grave stone!" Stud muffin, Daring kayaker, legendary lothario, Land Rover tinkerer, Runner up in the pub quiz, anything will be better than just "Tenant farmer for 40 years.." :)

That is incredibly sad😳😕

The really sad thing is that he was one of those old types who insisted he be seen ploughing on Christmas Day, and would treat the reps like crap as he was always way too busy to waste his valuable time. The estate couldn't wait to get the ground back so they could sell it up for gravel so it didn't get him anywhere in the long run and I don't suppose the young landlord has even heard of him.

I’d be happier with “tenant farmer for 40 years “ over lots of other things 👍
Plus it would mean I’m farming for quite a bit longer! 👍👍👍
