Selling Weed Killer

Aye-up,

Some of you may know we recently took over a retail business selling everything from feeds to bedding to coal and general rural supplies.

We are regularly asked if we sell weed killers, but nobody seems to want to buy the ready to use Roundup squirty stuff we stock, and I can’t say I blame them.

Can we supply stuff like Grazon, concentrated Roundup etc?

I’m reasonably sure there will be some hoops to jump through, even if just for storage. Does anyone have any idea what it would take?

Also, do you know any suppliers of these chems in , say, one or two litre packs? Maybe 5 litre at the most. We don’t get a huge amount of commercial farmers in, mostly smallholders, hobby farmers and equine folks.

Cheers, Pete.

You'll only be able to sell such products to professional operators. They'll need to provide proof by means of PA1/2 etc certificates. Could this severely restrict your potential market/customers??

Or just buy it off eBay where apparently you can buy a litre of 360 glyphosate as easily as anything. This advert was for litre bottles and claimed you don't need a ticket.
It was accompanied by a pic of a guy wearing cotton gloves to apply what must be a preharvest desiccation on his strawberry patch. Apparently it is for home ad professional use and the spelling isn't the only mistake in the pic.
Grazon just as available along with many other chems, just this one seller has sold nearly 7000 one litre bottles via ebay.

When did this become the case? It used to be that you needed the certificates to apply professional products, not to purchase them.
I remember talk of this coming in a few years ago, then it just seemed to disappear,
I don't see how it would be workable with the huge number of farmers buying for contractors to apply.

Here in ireland i think anybody can buy up to 1 litre, from 5l up you need to provide a professional user number (we have to keep records of purchases as well as applications).
The 1l jar is about half or 2/3 the price of a 5l jar in most places tho!

The main storage requirement is that in the event of spillage the container/ building would contain the complete volume.
Shipping container best method and most secure.
If you start to sell a fair bit the lacal big names will put pressure on your suppliers not to supply you

You will have to speak to BASIS as they police the rules. They will tell you what you need and what you can and can’t do.

You only need a cert to use it not buy it same as rat poison no law was passed on supply only use but as usual in England some gold plating and anal lefty wanna be police man makes up the rules
Ah right, maybe I've fallen for suppliers gold plating the rules.

As some have suggested, there will be farmers without certificates purchasing product and then getting contractor to apply.

There's a notice up at our supplier's trade counter, but maybe they're gold plating, and so maybe I presumed incorrectly. Makes sense what others have written.

That said, I know the big boy distributors won't sell to some of our horse paddock people without a cert, because they now ask me if I'll source chem and apply it (whereas they used to do it themselves). Maybe its an excuse by big distributors to not mess about with someone who only wants one can of MCPA every 4 years.
